Hello,

I am currently prepping for my Montreal K1 visa interview. Our I 129F was approved, we have been assigned a case number from NVC and I have completed DS 160. Do I really need a long form birth certificate (I’m the beneficiary)? My mother said I was never issued one. I’ve seen conflicting accounts of some saying you do and others saying they didn’t have one but all was fine. Please advise, any info is much appreciated!

Yes. Order one here:

Only takes 2 weeks or so to get it, why take the chance of not having what they need at the interview and waiting even longer?

After reading the forums, I applied for a long form birth certificate from MB Vital Stats.

I didn't want to risk any further delays in this already lengthy process.

On that note, if the document is required, they have done a very poor job at making it explicitly known.

Had I not accidentally stumbled upon a topic referencing the long form birth certificates, I would have never applied for one.

Same! You have to be really on top of it might be strategic on their part. Trying to weed out the disorganized ones maybe? lol. That’s the only reason I can come up with as to why it’s not clearly stated. Ordered mine yesterday lady said it will take 2 weeks.

Hopefully you get it in two weeks!

I was told 6-8 weeks for mine and it was definitely closer to 8 weeks.

The only thing that is more ridiculous than that time frame is the cost of expediting my application.

What a cash grab!

Honestly, the only reason I know for sure is that my fiance was denied at the border back in July and we contacted a lawyer at the time to ask if there was anything we could do to get the decision reversed / changed. She told us at the time that she could help with the K1 process and said that she would help avoid many common mistakes like taking the short form birth certificate to the interview which many Canadians miss.

Thank you for confirming!

So many posts online either confirming or denying that you need the long form birth certificate.

It's just dumb because the long form certs are relatively new so obviously the majority of us aren't going to have them.

On that note: People, please make sure that if you have to apply for a long form birth cert that you do so through your Province or Territory's Vital Stats! There are a lot of garbage links online that want you to apply through them, but it will not help with your application!

I also noticed that some sites reference that the long form birth certificate has the parent's names AND birthplace; however, mine only lists the names. The application did request birthplace, so I just assume that Manitoba doesn't put it on their long form certs.

Ugh that’s a drag. I live relatively close to where the certificates are issued so I’m not very worried but how ridiculous! Cash grab is right
