To each their own, I guess.  I trust me with my money, not someone who makes mistakes constantly with other peoples’ money.  Not knowcking your CPA, perhaps you have a good one.  But I have MANY acquaintances and friends who get steered wrong every year on taxes.

I grew up with my parent's CPA being a close personal friend and worked with my father for 30 years (he's now retired unfortunately so my father has had to use one of his colleagues...it's not the same).

I guess because of that I've looked for a similar relationship. I had a referral 2 years ago from a coworker. They have worked with their CPA (now mine as well) for 15 years, and her husband's father worked with him before that.

It's only been two years but it's been stress free and successful so far. As I said if something were to be filed incorrectly I have all the paperwork necessary so I'm not really worried about an audit.

As you said - to each their own. I prefer to just send him my papers come tax season and then sign a couple forms. How much extra time would doing it myself take? Maybe not long now but I know in the future it will only get more complicated. My father has 4 properties, multiple sources of income, lots of write offs. I wouldn't want to get to his position and not have someone I trust and then go looking at that point.

But your just flat wrong. It was just proven.

How so exactly? If you're going to use the treasury link you've posted earlier, that has nothing to do with it. Do you see our debt going down? Do you see us having money to pay for things we cannot pay for? Do I have to yell for OriZ to mansplain economics? :P

My husband wanted to try and file taxes on his own, but since taxes don't work the same way here as they are in the UK, he quickly got overwhelmed. We used our CPA.. a man that has known me since I was a little girl. He doesn't charge my dad, and his charge to use was minimal. What CPA would charge so much money for simple taxes? My knowledge of accounting is small, but from what I reviewed everything looked exactly correct. We had two huge refunds and owed on another. He explained everything in detail and was thorough.

Cutting taxes does not cause revenue to go up, especially if A) you're in the hole already B) you continue to spend like crazy

Not sure what you guys tried, but I can highly recommend Turbo Tax.  Very simple, eas to understand questions to guide you.  And nearly every step, if you are still not clear on what is being asked of you, there is an expanded help feature.

Another nice feature is that it remember past years’ taxes, so it imports running deductions/write-offs for you from last year.  Another thing is that he could use it now, run thru your taxes for 2017, and see how it compares to what your CPA yielded at each step along the way.  No need to pay for it until you file, so your husband could essentially complete the return, compare it to the CPA one, and learn where/why the differences are.  Might inspire confidence in him to do it himself next year (when taxes will be MUCH simpler than they are now for most of us “little earners”).

Used TurboTax for the first time this year (out of necessity) and hate it.

There seemed to be no way to view the actual IRS forms until payment was made and the final PDF was created.

Then, there was no obvious way (or any at all) to revise information on the forms.

They genuinely seem to court audits by incessantly sucking & sucking & sucking out stuff while not letting anyone back out.

Really angry.

Furthermore, TurboTax has no on-line program for estates & trusts.

In addition, their for-purchase package is compatible only with Windows, not Mac.

Really angry.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

You can access any form prior to paying.

You have to use the program to modify the forms.  (Used to be able to modify the form while viewing it, but didn’t have to this year, so not sure it’s still an option).

Not sure what you mean by sucking and sucking, but not being able to back out?

Turbo Tax Business handles trusts, estates, 1041s, etc.

I used a Mac to do my taxes the past 4 years.

That seems a tad... reckless.  Ever why would you trust someone to lie to the IRS for you, knowing full well if they screw up, YOU pay the price, not them?

Trusting a CPA with your taxes seems about as smart as trusting Stormy Daniels with pillow talk...

Or trusting the President and Congress to make the right decisions for the people.

I think you are right about not seeing the forms online now until it is complete.  Back when I did mine on a computer, I could delve into individual forms.  Now I can't find them online, other than the 154 pages of my completed tax return.
