I got my K1 VISA last week. When i received my Passport with Visa on it i noticed that its had FNU as my First name.

Passport:

Firstname: Balraj Singh

Lastname:  (Blank)

Visa:

Firstname: FNU

Lastname:  Balraj Singh

I am Still in india and will be travelling to USA in July mid. I searched about FNU and found that it can create mess in future.

I just need to split my name to Firstname: Balraj Lastname:  Singh

My question is When Should i change my Name? In India or USA

If USA weather

  • before marriage or After marriage (Consequences of both)
  • What name should i use for my AOS, SSN and other applications (Should it include FNU as firstname)
  • Or i get it corrected after Greencard

All i want is no FNU in my final documents

How did you submit your paperwork? Did you make an error there, or is this an error on the Embassy’s part (or whoever makes the visa).

I can’t tell you what the official procedure is, but I would contact the Embassy and request that they print out a new visa since it seems to be their mistake. I would not travel with this document.

Be careful with how you word yourself. If your name is not Balraj Singh Balraj Singh, then you do NOT need a name change. Saying this or doing this could cause you issues in the future. You just need them to correct a typo, basically.

Sounds like your paperwork in India is the issue - passport. Fix your passport and any other paperwork now and get a new visa as everything is tied to passport/visa. Your I-94 will be with the wrong info as well as social security number.
