What good would reading up do though in the bigger picture? Like I said, the way the world is now, virtually everything you do - from using any part of the internet, a cellphone, or even a club card you consent to your data being used in ways a lot of people actually don't want it being used. You would likely have to live an entirely off the grid life in order to not have such data collected and used. Ethically, do companies have the right to do this? We've long said that a TOS or EULA absolves a company of anything and gives them the power to do anything. But, is that actually ethical? Does it make it right? Are you okay with this forum doing whatever they want with your data? Ultimately there would be no facebook without users. They are the ones that provide the content. Instead of being customers, they are the cash cow.

TOS is a good thing. But it can also be abused for profit.

I have consented to this site doing what they want with the limited information I share here, same with FB.  It really doesn't matter, FB can make money anyway they want and if I freely give them a little bit of information that leads to advertisements I ignore in the end, so what.  People using this site, or FB, or any other social media platform really have no expectation of privacy with the information they choose to share otherwise everyone would be up in arms about the stupid ads that pop up.  Instead people are so bent out of shape companies would use the data for political reasons and even more outrageous it would be a Republican.  I suppose it is alright that a Democrat does it, but God forbid a GOP member does it.

I have tried it, nothing really shows up.  Doing a pretty good job of keeping a low profile.

Let's frame the question this way, should a TOS ethically give a company to do whatever they want with our stuff? It's fine if you're okay with it, but should you be? Should we all be? Should they be? People might be more comfortable if they knew what it was they were consenting to, or chose what they consented to. And why does Facebook have to go to great lengths to make it difficult to find out what data they've given and to where? Like I said, in the very few ads they gave my info to, they do not disclose from where or how they gave it. Some of the ads were completely odd, not even things I would be remotely interested in either. Btw, I'm not comfortable with any political organization grabbing my stuff, no matter which side they are on.

I might say if I was paying for the use of their site I would expect more security of the information that I share, but considering the FB and many other SM sites are free, YMMV with respect to what they do with the freely shared information.  It doesn’t really matter to me one way or the other as I have already stated, I keep a relatively low profile on FB and I don’t take advantage of signing into other sites or apps using my FB account. If people are not comfortable with the TOS of FB or any other site, there is an easy solution, don’t use them.  As to the OP, I will say it again, i don’t see what all the hubbub is about with this.  It really seems politically biased to me and really gives FB more credit for impacting a person’s thoughts and actions than they really have.
