Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Sunday there were "no innocent people" in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip after Israeli soldiers shot and killed 30 Palestinians during 10 days of protests.

"There are no innocent people in the Gaza Strip," Lieberman told Israel's public radio.

"Everyone's connected to Hamas, everyone gets a salary from Hamas, and all the activists trying to challenge us and breach the border are Hamas military wing activists."

Israel has faced mounting questions over its use of live fire after 10 days of protests along the Gaza Strip border during which its forces have killed 30 Palestinians and injured hundreds with live fire and tear gas, according to Gaza's health ministry.

Violence spiked again on Friday when thousands of protesters returned to the border. Nine Palestinians were shot and killed by Israeli forces and at least 1,060 were wounded, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza.

The dead included Palestinian video journalist Yasser Murtaja. The 30-year-old father was shot in the abdomen by an Israeli sniper while covering the protests despite wearing a flak jacket labelled "Press".

Also among the dead was 15-year-old Hussein Mohammed Madi from Gaza City. Madi was killed east of Gaza City by an expanding dum-dum bullet, the ministry said.

There have been no reported Israeli casualties.

Israel says it has opened fire only when necessary to stop damage to the border fence, infiltrations and attempted attacks.

But rights groups have harshly criticised Israeli soldiers' actions, and Palestinians say protesters are being shot while posing no threat to troops.

'We are always targeted by Israeli forces'

The Israeli military accused the "approximately 10,000 Palestinians” who attended of “rioting in five locations along the border with the Gaza Strip".

They added that "several attempts have been made to damage and cross the security fence under the cover of the smokescreen".

Everyone's connected to Hamas, everyone gets a salary from Hamas

- Avigdor Lieberman, Israeli Defence Minister

Palestinians burned hundreds of tyres in a bid to obscure the vision of Israeli snipers lined up on the border between Israel and Gaza.

"We have heard many warnings about using burning tyres, but we have no other options to express our anger and our right of return," demonstrator Said Ayman Hamdan told MEE on Friday.

"Whatever we use, we are always targeted by Israeli forces. So we use tyres that will misguide the Israeli’s gunshots, as we are peaceful protesters. We needed something to protect us from Israeli brutality."

Images on social media showed Israeli security forces deploying fans in a bid to remove the smoke and clear its vision of the border.

On 30 March, Israeli forces killed 19 Palestinians as tens of thousands of protesters gathered at the Israeli border.

The following day, Israel’s military said in a tweet that "Nothing was carried out uncontrolled; everything was accurate and measured, and we know where every bullet landed".

The tweet was later deleted.

Israel alleges that Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs the Gaza Strip and with which it has fought three wars since 2008, is seeking to use the protests as cover to carry out violence.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the European Union have called for an independent investigation into Israel’s use of force, which Israel has repeatedly rejected.

On Saturday, the European Union raised questions over whether Israeli troops engaged in "proportionate use of force".

I can actually listen to the interview in Hebrew, and in context, so yeah alot more reliable. He was basically saying many of them are being cynically used by Hamas(Hamas sent paid people to the fence, they sent little girls to the fence that the Israeli soldiers made sure went back unharmed) , his choice of words wasn't the best(and doesn't translate right either) in one sentence out of a whole interview and they turned that into a headline lol. Libel and more libel. Truth is Israel is the ONLY one looking after the strip - providing supplies, food and the little electriciy they get. That they don't get more than that is on Abbas. Israel has been in every meeting of countries donating to Gaza and has done nothing but encourage helping the population there provided it doesn't go to Hamas. It has been the only one so far, not Quatar, not Iran, but Israel that has kept its promises in this regard.  Lieberman's comment regarding innocent people was when asked about the journalist who got shot, and while I don't think he should have answered that at all as it is still being investigated, he was basically saying Hamas has used people dressed as journalists in the past, as well as Ambulances, which is true. And that if you're filming soldiers, or using a drone above them(in reference to said journalist who was a known Hamas supporter) they won't take any chances.

And I said what I had to say in the other thread. The Israeli forces there deserve a medal for the job they've done. No military in the world would have ended such situation with such minimal casualties. Oh yeah trust me, I have lots to say about the world's hypocricy, calling an "emergency" meeting at the security council during a Jewish holiday without an Israeli even able to be there, when it's been proven at least 70% of those killed were terrorists, while at the same night Syria murders hundreds. Believe me I'd say alot more if I wasn't so busy and didn't have a life. Maybe if they didn't want innocent people to get shot they shouldn't have had smoke all over the place and tried to blind them with mirrors. If I'm a soldier there, and I am targeting someone trying to damage the fence, throw a grenade, a bomb, a molotov cocktail, etc, and I can't see right because of their own stupidity -  I shoot anyway, and if someone else is hit that's on them, not on me. Unfortunately for me, I'd get in huge trouble for that because the IDF's rules of engagement are much, much stricter than that. And again, I know that for a fact alot better than any other self righteous idiot around the world because I've served in that army and because I've known people in these situations. The attempts to continuously smear one of the most moral militaries in the world are pathetic at best - use more reliable sources and you might learn a thing or two.

This is priceless. Lots of talk about how Israel is benevolent, and the Palestinians would be living in a Utopia, were it not for those pesky Palestinian terrorists. The other day, the Israelis opened fire on a large group of civilians, using snipers no less, and the anti Israeli BBC, naturally reported the incident as a kind of clash. Strange that?

How do you open fire on a "large group of civilians" using sniper fire? aren't snipers meant to target specific people? only those so consumed by the Palestinian narrative try to have their cake and eat it too.

Good glad we agree it's a much better solution than sending a tank or plane after them like your buddy Assad does...that's how much Israel cares about not hurting innocent civilians, it uses snipers in order to get only the ones endangering the soldiers. I'm happy you finally see the light.

Fair enough, all the Israelis that I have ever met, could converse perfectly in English. Also, I understand all universities in Israel require prespective students to pass an English exam, before admission. No, I just don't believe it was a translation problem.

I'm actually not emotionally invested in anything, one of my problems if you ask my wife. I deal with facts, cold hard facts, and I know the facts on the ground better than anyone who reads about it in some blog or hears about it on the news. Unless you want to tell me you know more Palestinians and Israeli Jews than I do, which I doubt. He wasn't even speaking in English, it was an interview in Hebrew, and it was taken out of context in that article obviously. And no, there are many Israelis who don't speak fluent english, most know the basics, some are more fluent than others.
