Surrendering Greencard

Hello everyone!

I will come straight to the point. I am a permanent resident in the US, currently out of the country since a few month. I received my Greencard through marriage to my wife (US Citizen). Since the removal of conditions took some time I went to my country of citizenship for a few months and my wife and I were debating on our future. The removal of condition was approved while I was abroad and the Greencard sent to my wife.

 

Here is the thing, my wife and I decided to move here permanently, thus forfeiting my permanent residency. I would like to fly to the US on vacation late next month as a visitor. In order to not run into any issues, I would like to formally surrender my Greencard and fly there for a week through the Visa-waiver program.

 

My Questions:

1. Should my wife send the Greencard via mail, so I could surrender it at the embassy here?

1.2 Is sending a Greencard via mail illegal?

2. If my wife cannot send it via mail, how can I surrender it? Fill out the form I-407, sign it, send it to my wife, and she would send it to the USCIS along with the GC?

2.2 If this is what I have to do, how long would it take to process, so I could fly as a visitor the coming month?

3. Anything special I would have to consider when surrendering my GC? (I am aware that if we go back to the US we would have to go through the IR-1 route and the citizen clock would start at zero again)

 

TLDR: Wife and I want to establish residence abroad. My GC is in the US, and I am abroad, how to I surrender it correctly?
