Toledo, Ohio – Four teenagers charged for throwing a sandbag from an Ohio highway overpass that killed a Michigan man have been sentenced to a youth treatment facility program.

Police say the boys, who were then each 13 or 14, threw rocks and sandbags onto Interstate 75 near downtown Toledo in December. One sandbag smashed through a car windshield and hit a rider, 22-year-old Marquise Byrd, of Warren. He later died.

Age difference perhaps?  Not sure to which case you refer.  These kids were 13-14 I think I read.

I'm not saying "give them life".

But at 13 and 14 years old, they know better.

And this is AFTER a few kids were dealt  jail time for the exact same thing.

I find it kind of ironic that a DACA hardliner would say "take it easy" on kids who litterally committed murder.

13 and 14 is still pretty young, and for all we know, the boys really are sorry. Until we know more, I think we need to trust in the judge's ability to choose the correct punishment.

Sorry really isn't going to bring back the loved one though.

13 and 14 isn't that young.

This wasn't a crime of passion, they would have had to take a few conscience steps to get to that point.

I mean, the family even thinks the punishment was too light.

The boys apologized to Byrd’s family in juvenile court Friday. The judge said they could end up in juvenile detention for years if they don’t complete programming of unspecified length at the youth treatment center.

Are you referring to the case up in Northern Genesee County?  If so, I don’t think those teens have been convicted or sentenced yet, but I do believe they have been charged with 2nd degree murder.

I'm pretty sure that short of a life sentence or the death penalty, ANY victim's family would think the sentence too light. (Not disagreeing with you, just sayin').

Yes.. I believe the kid who through the rock was charged with murder while the others are being considered as accessories.

True.. I think we would have to ask the family.

Thankfully, we don't have to ask.  The law (usually) takes the emotion out of the equation.  There are families of victims who would forgive the perp, and there are those who would want to see all these kids do life in prison.

That being said, I still think this sentence is too light.  Except for the "indeterminate amount of time" in the program.  But unless someone tracks each of these kids by name for future convictions,  we will likely never know how effective the punishment really ends up being.

Inaccurate... A ruling void of emotion would have tried them as adults ,offering 25 to life.( The standard for murder)

The judge is in Fact making an emotional ruling based on their age.

Well we do not know the details, perhaps the rocks slipped and accidentally fell?
