My stepdaughter is extremely sick and now in hospital for 12 days, and its really bad because I keep getting denied insurance because I cant get her a social security card. My wife was given one in like 5 minutes no problem. But SS office says a K2 isnt eligible for a social security card until they receive their green card, which is still months and months away. I was just now told that a K2 who wants a Social has to apply for a temporary I-551 stamp on her passport, THEN apply for a Social after DHS grants her the I-551. It sounds backward and unrealistic. They are essentially telling me that ALL minors who come in to US on K2 visas cant receive social security cards, which also means no health insurance often. Anyone know anything about this or can maybe point me in the right direction ?

The VJ SSN guide says a holder of a K-2 requires an EAD.  Did you file EAD paperwork for her?

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Have you applied for EAd for your stepchild?... It can take more than a year to get an actual green card, but K-2 is eligible to obtain a SS# with EAD

Now I just feel like an idiot. She had no plans to work hence I didnt any reason to apply for an EAD for her, just for her mother. So she can apply for EAD even though shes still currently 15 ? If so, then ill apply today if someone can assure me that applying for EAD can get her a Social ? Its weird because my wife got Social before she ever applied for EAD.

it's a little bit different process - for K1 & K2 to get their SS#s. K1 is eligibla right after arrival, as soon as I-94 is available online.

K-2 - after a child gets EAD or actual a green card. Usually EAD comes first, way before green card.

You should  file for EAD for K-2 anyway - for a child to be able to get a SS#, Driver License..soon.. As you see it's not only about work...

You can apply for EAD/AP  anytime, while K-2's AOS pending.. Just submit NOA-1 of  I-485 along with EAD/AP paperwork.

Good luck!

SSN isn't required to be covered on health insurance. Tell them to enter all zeroes.

Do you have a source?  Most carriers do require a SSN.

Depends on the insurance carrier.  Some require it.....

From IRS.GOV:

The IRS site also says that if you do not have a SSN, you can talk to your carrier about using DOB.  However, I'm sure individual insurance carrier policy dictates what is required.

You do not need a SSN to buy Insurance, many people do not have one.

Not uncommon for HR not to know this, you need to kick it up the line.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Agreed, an SSN is not required for health insurance. Until you are a bona fide resident, the 1095-B requirement doesn't apply.

Insurance companies will request it, and HR probably as well. But if you press the issue, you should be able to get through to somebody who can properly address the issue.
