So Im going through a really hard time and hoping to find answers about my situation. I applied for my fiance's visa in November 2017 so we are waiting on our NOA2. Lately, I've been in a really rough place financially. I finished my first 2 years of med school and studying for a pre-board exam through my school. Once I pass this exam, I will be allowed to sit for my board exam and then start my 3rd year of school. So in the meantime Ive been facing a hard time financially during this gap time. Im still a student, but not considered "active" enough for my loans to be in in-school deferment. While I study, Im also not supposed to be working either per my school. While I study, I also can't receive any loans so Im basically living off of my savings at this point. Due to this situation, my loans went into repayment. Despite talking to the loan companies and explaining that Im still in school, they were not willing to work with me. I can't afford the payments, so it destroyed my credit score that was once really good. Im so concerned that this will affect my fiance's visa. My stepdad said he will co-sponsor. He makes 100K+ per year. Will this be enough? Im so stressed out. All of this should be cleared up in a couple of months once I am able to take my pre-board exam, and then board exam. Once Im signed up to take my board exam, they will consider me "active" and my loans will go back to being current. But this might not happen before we receive the NOA2. How much will this affect my k1 visa application? I feel so defeated and neither the school nor the loan companies are willing to help me.

If your dad is willing to co-sponsor because you're a full time student and he makes more than enough to cover the poverty limits, I believe you'll be fine despite your student loan situation.

You should be fine, BUT.....what are your plans to support your significant other and pay for the expenses such as AOS..etc. It's going to be tuff on your new marriage..but hey if you stay strong it will be fine. Don't worry about the loans and such...since you have a co-sponsor.

Thank you all for the responses. It made me feel a lot better. My fiance has money saved up and my parents are going to help us when we first get started. By then I should be in rotations and Ill also have my loans to get us through so Im hopeful that everything will be okay.  Thanks again everyone!

I am in the exact same situations (just out of college, slammed with student loans and at the moment have a crappy job outside of my field) and we just got accepted, so I would say you should do just fine. My brother co-sponsored for us and only makes 27k a year, but they didn't question our finances or if I would have trouble supporting him at all. Your fiance may be asked questions about your situation as a student or something/lack of job/whatev, but I don't think you would get rejected as long as you have a co-sponsor. You don't give financial info until the interview anyway, so if you do have some time, depending on how long the NOA2 and processing afterwords takes. Make sure to get a copy of your dad's birth certificate and proof of address to take to the interview, they wanted both for my brother.
