Hello ,

I have a few questions about the k1 visa ! I have been dating my bf for over 2 years almost 3 in june and i currently had hus baby biy who is 3 weeks now . We have been struggling emotionally since he is far from us .

I am currently unemployed and am aware that have to have a sponser who is willing to cover mine and his and babys costs. But i tried going to consultations with lawyers and was told by a friend that filing on my own was a lot cheaper and essier .

I wanted to know the steps into doing so on my own and costs?

Also if the form is $535 or thats the price to send the form ?

Be sure to get all forms directly from USCIS. You can download them for free. And be sure to read all the instructions for each form until you understand them. Ask questions as necessary.

The filing fee for the I-129F is $535. This is sent with the I-129F. After approval of the I-129F, the form is sent to NVC then to the embassy.

From there, the beneficiary will need to pay the $265 MRV fee ("K-1 application fee"), undergo a medical ($200-$400, varying by country), get documents + translations as needed, etc.

After arriving on the K-1 visa and marrying within 90 days, they would need to file for AOS. This is a $1225 filing fee, plus costs for any kind of documents to go with it.

Hi

I was curious about this when I started as well because my good friend hired a lawyer and I learned that sometimes the process takes longer with a lawyer. We decided to complete the forms ourselves. It was alot of reading and double checking our check lists and instructions and reading the forums on here for extra guidance they are great but it is worth every second! Especially if you have a child dont waste your money :)

We did it all on our own without any errors too! So I was very happy.

The process was a tiny bit expensive. Some costs we didnt really consider at first were:

Travel to your medical destination ..sometimes they dont offer a doctor in your city let alone your province or state (not sure where you are from)

I had to travel for my medical and for my interview so I stayed in the city for a week and a half, took my medical there, stayed until it was ready and than went to my interview with it in hand.

That's the only major expense I didnt really know about at first. There are other tiny expenses no one will really mention here and there like applying for a marriage certificate or getting a cell phone, moving expenses ..just think about everything. Good luck! Oh also the process takes a long time so if you are interested I would start sooner than later.

Will i pay the MRV fee after i get some type of letter that says to do so? And the medical is that for my fiancee who os out of the us ? And will he need some type of paper that he will need to take to his dr.? Or just go get a regular medical/physical done ?

I am from arizona and my fiancee is from sonora, mexico . I never looked into doing it on my own until someone mentioned it and told me how much cheaper it was . So we both will need a medical done ? And do they send us to a certain dr. Or how does that work ? Im confused on that part . Will we need to take certain papers to tske to that dr ? About how long did it tske you?

Does it take long for him to get the 90 days and come to the us ?

How to pay the MRV fee varies by embassy/consulate. This is paid after thew I-129F is approved and you get a case number from NVC. The interview instructions from the embassy (packet 3 / packet 4) should include more detail as well.

The medical must be perform by a panel physician approved by the embassy. This is typically limited to only a handful of places, or sometimes only 1 medical center. This is not performed by a doctor of your own choosing, and it's not a regular checkup type of physical.

The medical is only for the foreign beneficiary, not the US petitioner.

Current timelines are about 8-10 months from I-129F filing to embassy interview, on average.

Only the beneficiary needs their medical done. There are only certain medical locations listed for your country that you can go to. You will have to look that up based on the beneficiaries country.

The doctor will give you a list of what you need to bring with you. Some countries dont allow medicals until you have an interview date and need to prove that with your interview email and other countries can get their medical whenever just remember the closer to your interview the better as medicals do expire after a year. And it needs to be valid when you enter usa. I'd do it maybe 2 to 3 weeks prior if you can. I did mine 4 days prior and picked it up. Took it to my interview but that was because the only doctor was in a city far from me so I had to cram everything in one trip. I believe it's taking like 7 to 9 months for some people to be approved for the k1 Visa right now. It use to be 3   mine was 4.5 months last year. Than you have 90 days to get married. I would search for a forum from the beneficiaries country people that are from the same country will be able to give you way better info than me since I'm from Canada. Good luck !
