The title says it all, i am sorry but i am not feeling well after the bad news i got.

I have been married for 9 years, I have my Permanent Green Card.  I applied for Citizenship last December 2017.  I did my fingerprint appointment back in January of 2018.

I have not received anything regarding to my Interview (they told me it might take 3 to 6 months to get a letter with the date for my interview).

My wife and I decided to get divorced 1 week ago, I have read a few forums which that will not impact my Citizinship (Naturalization), is this correct?

At my interview, I just need to show proof that I am getting divorce.

  1. Will I have any problems at the interview because of the divorce?
  2. Any papers do you suggest to bring?

Thank you!

Hi there, sorry to hear about your situation. If you are a permanent resident for 5 or more years you should be good. The immigration officer on the day of your interview will verify the information you provided on the N-400 form. You can update your present marital status during that time with proof if you have any. I am very positive everything will be fine, regards.

If you filed under the five year rule then divorce will have no impact.

If you filed under the three year rule then your N-400 would be denied.

You are mistaken.

One of the requirements when applying under the three year rule is that you are living with your US citizen spouse in a bona fide marital union. Someone who is separated or divorced no longer meets this requirement, and so cannot be approved if they file/have filed an N-400 under the three year rule; they must instead wait to apply under the five year rule.
