A lot of those are done by knives not guns.

True, I was simply addressing the accuracy of this statement:

There are hundreds of millions of gun owners in this country, and not a single one will have an accident today.  The only misuse of guns comes in environments where there are drugs, alcohol, bad parents, and undisciplined children.  Period.

How about knives?  Seems to be a lot of knife accidents happening now days, particularly in the UK.

If knife accidents and stabbings are getting out of hand we should certainly discuss how we might be able to stop it.

There is a thread about it in the UK.  London overtook NYC for deaths the past few months with most of those being knife attacks.

So hopefully the UK is addressing the issue.

It's not as big of an issue here. Whereas I'd say almost every day I read or hear something about a gun "accident". Right now in Houston it's about a girl who accidentally shot her brother (or boyfriend?) in the head in the car. Fortunately he is alive.

You can say that about any type of assault weapon be it a knife, a car, a hammer, etc.

Is that because the press wants to cover those stories?  I am sure there are accidental stabbings, or cuttings out there that may not get the coverage.  Regardless, it still takes an overt act by a human to do harm with any weapon.

I'm pretty sure there is no standard definition for "assault weapon" that includes a car or a hammer.

Hammers, cars and to a lesser extent knives (depending on the type) are tools that have uses other than killing. You don't build a house with a pistol, or get to work by riding your AR-15

It's much harder to accidentally stab someone than it is to accidentally shoot someone...Just don't run with knives/scissors.

I guess I use common sense.  Any object (regardless of its intended purpose) used to assault another human being is at that point an assault weapon by definition.  Makes sense to me.

You can't say "by definition" if there is no definition for assault weapon that meets that description. Find me a dictionary that establishes that definition. It's the exact opposite - It is not by definition.

Assault weapon is used to refer to particular types of weapons. I think you will find it just refers to types of firearms.

Any item can be used as a weapon in an assault...that doesn't make that item an assault weapon.

It doesn't?  So if a hammer or knife are used as a weapon, they shouldn't be called a weapon?  Makes absolutely no sense, then again when definitions are derived for political purposes they rarely make sense.

I didn't say it shouldn't be called a weapon. It isn't an assault weapon. Assault weapon is a specific term that applies to specific weapons.

The ordinance literally plagiarizes the California assault weapon ban circa 2016 and earlier. In 2017 they dropped the whole magazine removal with a tool to a new definition that includes disassembly of the action. Of course this year they may move the goal post even further and cover all semiautos with a detachable magazine. That is why the NRA arguments are valid if people are willing to really get in to the nitty gritty details. Governments are establishing assault weapon bans saying they are common sense and then constitently moving the goal post and enveloping more firearms.

Then it should be called an assault firearm, or an assault gun.  Weapons can come in many forms and all of them can be used in an assault.  I suppose that doesn't fit the political narrative though...sad.
