i just got the email indicating our K1 application was approved earlier today  and i'm wondering what sort of timeline i can expect until i receive my packet from the Vancouver consulate with all the info for getting my medical, etc. i'll be traveling to wichita to see my honey on may 17 and will be gone for about 2 weeks... is it likely the package will arrive during that time?

Might take a couple of weeks. CSC usually sits on the approval for a week or so before they send to the NVC. Then the NVC assigns a case number and then forwards to the consulate. You may want to do a timeline search on CSC and Vancouver to see how long it generally took from NOA2 to Packet 3.

that's kind of what i was figuring on... one thing that might throw a curveball into things though is that i specified that Calgary was my local consulate (didn't know only Van and Mtrl did the interviews for the K1's), so we checked with USCIS and were told it would automatically get routed to Vancouver. is this correct? and am i correct in thinking it will be Vancouver and NOT Montreal for our NVC (i'm in Edmonton)? i really hope so because not only is Vancouver a hell of a lot closer, but interviews are scheduled faster there by my understanding...

One of the NVC's main jobs is to assign your case to the correct consulate... which they will, automatically, regardless what you put!

Congrats in getting your NOA2! I'm also waiting for my Packet 3 from Vancouver right now. I'd give them about three to four weeks, really, but I was also wondering if there was any way to get email notification from NVC or the consulate so that we're not so antsy? :D

You can call or email the NVC with your case number and ask if they received the case and assigned a case number yet. If so, they'll give you the case number and tell you when they sent it out to the consulate. Then with that case number you can email Vancouver and ask if they received the file and if so, when they sent out the paperwork.

For NVC, you need to speak to a live person or email them. For K visas, your case number will NOT be available by punching it in with a touch tone phone.

ok, so after doing quite a bit of reading... the NVC will forward things to Montreal, which will then automatically forward everything to Vancouver? i'm in Edmonton, so Vancouver is MUCH closer than Montreal, not to mention appears to have faster processing times. or do i have to specifically request that everything get transferred to Vancouver? if so, how do i go about doing this?

The NVC should automatically send your file to Vancouver.......no Montreal involvement for you , ya lucky ####### ;)

consider postponing that trip to Wichita and make it a move instead of a visit.......yes Vancouver will move that fast.......most likely.

Congrats!!

if vancouver (and the NVC) would move that fast, i would be SO happy but i've learned not to count my chickens before they hatch. since our NOA2 only occurred on May 3, is it reasonable to assume that the NVC would have our file already and have assigned their case number to it? i know the phone number for the NVC is posted in that section, but is the email address indicated to? i don't recall seeing it, but then i've read so much info the last few days it's all a blur to me! lol

i plan to make the appointment for my medical shortly, as well as get the police check but i am a little unsure of what's required with the latter... if i go to the local RCMP office (no city police here) and tell them i need my fingerprints and a criminal background check for my move, will they know what forms and info to give me? or will i need to get a specific form from my packet to be filled out? sorry for the questions, i just want to make sure i'm doing everything right.

AndreaK,

This RCMP site may help you about the police certificate stuff: http://www.rcmp.ca/crimrec/finger2_e.htm

I know in Vancouver, I have to go directly to the RCMP office with paperwork from the consulate to prove that I have a reason to obtain a certificate. If you're also going directly to your local RCMP office, I'd assume it'd be a similar process. As far as I know, they'll have the form on hand to take your fingerprints.

I'm also not sure about the cost, since it says on the RCMP BC site that it costs $40 and on the general site it says it costs $25.

One ONLY requires fingerprinting if one had ever had a criminal record. NO criminal record, NO fingerprinting! Give ur loval detachment a call, some detachments what proof on why u need the background check done. I just printed off a page from the USCIS website stating it was required, or bring the letter from ur packet!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
