Famous assassinations: Who could doctors save today?

DONNA HEALY Of The Gazette Staff
Feb 29, 2008

Would Julius Caesar or John F. Kennedy have survived if they were attacked in Billings today?

Dr. Terry Housinger, a general surgeon at the Billings Clinic, tackled the topic of famous assassinations at a meeting of the History of Medicine Club, offering his audience of medical students and doctors a chance to reflect on the evolution of trauma care.

After describing the circumstances surrounding each famous assassination, Housinger offered his opinion on whether modern medicine could have saved those high-profile victims if the attack had occurred in Billings today.

Here's the gist of what Housinger gleaned from the historical record:

You know I have talked with a Vietnam Vet about this probably a year ago now. We were talking about the VA and how it likes to screw us Veterans of course. So I commented that yeah they(the VA) is pissed about having to deal with so many of us compared to WW2, Korea, and Vietnam ere veterans, he was wondering why that is. I straight out told him that the advances in medical technology have allowed people wounded in combat to live in this day and age, when back in Vietnam they would have died from their injuries. So now the VA is on the hook for having to deal with and care for some individuals that are significantly wounded that in reality would have died in years past.

Interesting observation.  As is mentioned in the article, it's too bad that no systematic medical or surgical advances arose from the Civil War.

An odd sort of trivia I remember: the assassination of President Garfield, of which the above article mentions... the guy died a pretty agonizing death honestly, but this death actually spurred incredible inventions we take for granted now. Garfield's original doctor/surgeon at the time was a real quack, that did not believe in the concept of bacteria and sterilization and probably did more to kill him than the bullet of which they could not find. Alexander Bell was eventually called to test his experimental version of the first metal detector. The device failed (he didn't realize until too late) that it wasn't working because of the metal springs in the mattress of the patient. Engineers also invented the first version of an air conditioner, because the President ran high fevers, and it was 100 degrees in his room that summer.

No, he died from pneumonia/septic shock, and was the first president to die while in office.

Death and funeral[edit]

220px-Death_of_Harrison%2C_April_4_A.D._

Death of Harrison, April 4, 1841

On March 26, 1841, Harrison became ill with a cold—according to the prevailing medical misconception of that time, his illness was believed to be caused by the bad weather at his inauguration, but the illness did not arise until more than three weeks afterwards.[109] Harrison tried to rest in the White House, but could not find a quiet room because of the steady crowd of office seekers. His extremely busy social schedule also made rest time scarce.[96]

Harrison's doctors tried several cures, such as applying opium, castor oil, leeches, and Virginia snakeweed, but the treatments only made Harrison worse and he became delirious. He died nine days after becoming ill,[110] at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 4, 1841. Harrison's doctor, Thomas Miller, diagnosed Harrison's cause of death as "pneumonia of the lower lobe of the right lung".[109] A medical analysis made in 2014, based on Dr. Miller's notes and records of the White House water supply being downstream of public sewage, concluded that he likely died of septic shock due to enteric fever.[111][112]

Harrison became the first United States president to die in office. His last words were to his doctor, but they were assumed to be directed at Vice President Tyler: "Sir, I wish you to understand the true principles of the government. I wish them carried out. I ask nothing more." Harrison served the shortest term of any American president: March 4 – April 4, 1841, 30 days, 12 hours, and 30 minutes.[113][114]

The President's body was borne through Washington. Solomon Northup gave an account of the procession in Twelve Years a Slave:[115]

The next day there was a great pageant in Washington. The roar of cannon and the tolling of bells filled the air, while many houses were shrouded with crape, and the streets were black with people. As the day advanced, the procession made its appearance, coming slowly through the Avenue, carriage after carriage, in long succession, while thousands upon thousands followed on foot—all moving to the sound of melancholy music. They were bearing the dead body of Harrison to the grave....I remember distinctly how the window glass would break and rattle to the ground, after each report of the cannon they were firing in the burial ground.

Harrison's funeral took place in the Wesley Chapel in Cincinnati, Ohio, on April 7, 1841.[116] His original interment was in the public vault of the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C., but his remains were later buried in North Bend, Ohio. The William Henry Harrison Tomb State Memorial was erected at the gravesite in his honor.[117]

I knew that he'd croaked consequent to a cold.  Can't fall into rivers, because "Tippecanoe and get wet, too."

Couple of famous people croaked on April 4.

And thinking about changes in history had people lived, Zachary Taylor might have been able to head off the Civil War.
