you MUST be a US citizen to do jury duty.. i got one and responded

 

NOT A US CITIZEN.. then i got it returned bc i forgot to sign it:/ so yes, write NOT A US CITIZEN and dont forget to sign it!!!!!

 

ps in la they send them off of driver license! but yes, do not send it in! bc you cant do it as a greencard holder

What about if i already became a citizen? i already mentioned in my previous replies that i already had my oath and become a citizen

There are ways to get yourself excused from jury duty.  They should be listed on your jury summons or in papers that accompanied it.  If you don't want to serve, consider which of the reasons might apply to you, and return the jury summons in accordance with the instructions.

Then you should serve unless as TBoneTX says you have an acceptable reason to excuse yourself.

 

imo jury duty is a small price to pay - if you even consider it a price - for the privilege of being a US citizen.

Yep. In a lot of California, people get called for jury duty pretty frequently compared to other states. You cannot be asked more than once every 12 months. In my experience while living in CA, I have gotten called for jury duty once every 2-3 years.

If you are a citizen, then it is your civic duty as a citizen to attend.

In my state, and as explained to me clearly by the judge yesterday, there is virtually no way to be excused from serving unless you are 70+ or a non-citizen or meet a qualifying category. All you can do these days is be granted a temporary deferment by having a prior commitment or health issue. If you have no transport, they expect you to walk to a bus or get a cab (which is quite silly for me considering I'd have to walk miles in the woods to get to the nearest bus). I'm having to inconvenience multiple people this week for transport...

That's a shame.  It means that a lot of resentful people are probably going to serve, unwillingly.

I was recently given notice for jury duty, but was able to defer it until August due to work/family conflict.

 

The last time I served was over 12 years ago in which I was selected for a trial that lasted over 2 weeks. Not everyone is fortunate to have an employer pay your time while serving as I did. While I agree everyone should serve, it can cause undue hardship should one get selected like I did. I cannot imagine losing 2 weeks pay and if you had childcare on top of that.

Absolutely. I wasn't picked for the trial yesterday, but got to know some of those jurors who were seated. None of them wanted to be there, and one in particular was furious. There were people there who had just had surgery and using a walker, another that needed to postpone a medical appointment, and another that had no one to pick up her children. They attempted to seat two pregnant ladies as well, but the defense objected. Some of these people drove well over an hour to get to the courthouse.

The worst part is that the presiding judges and individual court judges "welcome" everyone with flowery speeches about how jury service is a sacred calling probably directly from God, and how valued we are, and how very delighted and honored we should be, and how there isn't possibly any better way to spend our time or efforts for the lavish payment of $6/day, etc.  Poppycock.  Most people are probably plotting how to get kicked by the prosecuting/defense attorney (criminal case) or the plaintiff's/defendant's attorney (civil case).

Thank you , if  they do not pick me for the trial same like you , that means i will be there just for 1 day?  as i understood  you  were there  for 1 day ?

Our county system was recently changed - the general rule is one trial (if not picked it's one day, or if picked can run as long as the trial) or one week of service. We had 230 persons, so they can only have about half come in per day to see if they qualify to sit on the jury. I was only there for one day, yes, but you must check in via phone or online each day afterwards, to see if I would be required for the rest of the week, even if I wasn't selected for the trial. Some courthouses are very busy, with multiple trials at the same time that they need jurors for. Some of the jurors that were there on Monday (the first group) were requested to come back again for today, so depending on your number it's entirely possible to sit more than one day of service. Thankfully since I was part of the second group, and I satisfied the judge with questions he asked, I was released from service .

 

As far as the trial went, the verdict came back pretty fast... as no one wanted their time wasted. I knew they would find the person guilty.
