I purchased a house back in 2011 in Davao City, paid around $25K for it, it was a great deal at the time,  the family who was selling it needed money for their fish wholesale business.  I got a divorce in 2012 and basically donated the house.   Looking back I could get a nice rental property for 10 years in Philippines, and move to different locations in Philippines and not be stuck to one place.

Correction.  You PAID/donated for a house ... you never purchased a house.   It was always your wife's property .. with or without a divorce.

I left the Navy a looongggg time ago.  Have no idea what its like now.

Lately have only been in Cavite and PPC

I have seen videos of it and it is not a place for me at all. I think my wife wouldn't let me out of her sight if we went there.

Heh, I still can't go to Waltermart or SM alone.  I'm not allowed for "My safety" :)

That's funny in my book no matter which way of the coin you look at it. I go driving all over the mountains of Compostela Valley province from New Bataan to Maragusan by myself with no issues but I am watched and it is reported back to my wife where I am. I have come back from driving hours in the mountains and my wife's like "why were you driving all the way up there in so and so place?" and I asked her how she knew and she said "friends of hers told her where I was". Because I guess me being the only white guy in that area then I am easy to look out for. But I really like going up into the mountains with the Mandaya people because they haven't seen a white guy in along time so it's fun for me.

Sounds like good times, I'm seriously working on a way to work from the Philippines so we can move there. I don't want to wait either until I retire! I'm not sure I want to be a landlord but it would be a good investment since the housing prices seem to be going up very fast (In Cagayan de Oro city) and yes we will be settling in Mindanao, i don't have a problem with the area.

Don't worry about Mindanao, I love it there as well. My wife has family in CDO and I know a guy I contracted with that has been living in CDO without issue for a couple years now. But I will be staying in the Davao Region for sure.

The nice thing is my wife has all her family there, I've felt safe always on my trips there and Kyle (the BecomingFilipino guy) lives there and loves it. The only thing is my wife said she wouldn't let me go out on my own (alone on a road trip maybe), but we will see about that, maybe once I get the hang of it there and can speak more then just a few words of Tagalog/Visayas.

That is always the issue is wither or not to pick up Bisaya or Tagalog....

Every time I go there I like it less and less.  The first 2-3 trips I loved it.  I couldn't really understand why there are so many OFWs and why everyone wants to leave to other countries, it seemed like paradise, easy going laid back lifestyle.

My last trip, I recently retired from the Air Force and so we decided to take a longer 4-month trip. About 2 months in I couldn't wait to get back.  But, now I totally get why there are so many OFWs and so many desperate to leave.

Before the trip I was kind of thinking retiring there could be an option (after my daughter's out of school, she's only 4 now).  After, I know it's not for me.

I recommend a longer trip like I took before committing to staying there.

I'm sitting where all those OFWs are the past two weeks (Abu Dhabi, Muscat and Salalah) and I can't figure out why they come here :)  and I'm just over here 5-6 times a year

I understand that are large number of expats living there are not the best people to hang around, they are either running from the law or have lots of skeletons in their closet.

There are some strange white guys there.  Most of them will avoid greeting you.  I tried to make eye contact, just to give a "hey" or a nod and usually once they notice a fellow white guy they will look away, like they're ashamed to be there.

I never thought some may be running from the law, that's a possibility, maybe they fear being ID'd.

Pull out the camera and video them, see what they do :)

Yeah that's the thing is a lot of them are running from stuff in their home countries and usually don't like messing with other Expats, usually if they do it is to try and scam them somehow. If you go to a number of the Expat forums then that is a readily talked about issue. I am a member of a Expatforum for the Philippines and there have been issues before like that.

Also don't forget that those Expats may be doing some nefarious things here in the Philippines so watch out.

I have had the same experience.  Mostly extremely unfriendly old guys that simply ignore you.

I don't really think they are running from the law.  I just think they are simply social misfits in a place where their wallet smooths over a variety of problems they have with others.

Finally done.

When I mean running from something I don't necessarily mean the law, but that can be a factor as well. What I mean is that they are running from past relationships, financial issues, some law issues yes. But there some I have met that are social misfits and like it that they can do what they want because they have a fat stack.
