Could you move to Philippines?

The are a lot of pros and cons of moving from USA to Philippines.

Could you do it?  Seems as if the guys I know who went over there and were married got bored after a short time.  I understand that are large number of expats living there are not the best people to hang around, they are either running from the law or have lots of skeletons in their closet.

I think having a steady income like Social Security and maybe a couple of rental properties would almost have to happen, unless you have a large cash reserves.  I am thinking it would take around $1200 to $1500 per month to live comfortable there.

I do like the fact I could get a nice rental place fully furnished in a gated community with a guard for around 12K to 18K per month, that is appealing.

Just when you think you have TDS eradicate,  a new case shows up.

I hope that I can do it since I built a home there.  It is small now but has room for an addition.  Only downfall is it is on the family compound

YMMV

I purchased a house back in 2011 in Davao City, paid around $25K for it, it was a great deal at the time,  the family who was selling it needed money for their fish wholesale business.  I got a divorce in 2012 and basically donated the house.   Looking back I could get a nice rental property for 10 years in Philippines, and move to different locations in Philippines and not be stuck to one place.

I am seriously thinking about doing it when I reach the retirement number here at my job now in which I can legally retire at 2030 with the Federal government and get a pension later on. Since I have my VA disability money coming I can comfortably live off that in Tagum City with no issues, all the while waiting until I turn 65 to take out my other retirement pay. I am only 34 right now so this is still a long way off for me but at least I am thinking about it.

Usually the people that move over to SE Asia when they are younger are usually running from something and I don't want to be one of those people at all.

Come on now I could have bought that house from you for $30k and you didn't have to just give it away now.

Wife and I will retire there in about eight years.  She was buying farms but has now switched to boarding houses near universities.  Not sure we will need the hassle for that cash as I have 3 pensions, but its fun for her.

Just want to walk out in the morning and grab a coconut or a mango and enjoy!

I'm in my early 50's, Made my first trip to Philippines when I was age 42, wish I would of went earlier.  I have seen to many friends and family die in the 60's, I don't know waiting till your 65 would be wise.  Get over there while you are young and enjoy life.

If I was in your shoes I would seriously consider taking that VA disability money and making a go of it there while you are so young.

I have always thought about doing that because my wife was telling me a lot of the boarding houses are basically ####### and just some place to sleep that's it. I will have about 3 pensions when I fully retire which is great because I will live like a King over there.

You might have to wash them out nightly with bleach.

I have never been to Angles City.

I really need to spend a few days there and explore the sites and night time activities.

Is it a good time?

That's what I am thinking about as well. I told myself that I will either do it in 2030 or when I turn 50 whatever I feel like at that time because I still want to live my life and I don't want to have to wait until I am 60ish. Who knows how I will be like at that age. Luckily I am a 100% from the VA so that's like $3k a month right there coming in not including SS and my 401k when I get those two at 62.

What really got me thinking about that was I had a awesome coworker at my last job who worked until he was 62, and had his retirement all planned out with a date already set. He was having some stomach pains and was just attributing that to getting old because he was in decent shape(one of those thick guys that could ride a bike for days). Until one day the pain got so bad he had to go to the hospital, ran some tests on him,  and come to find out he had Stage 4 liver cancer. He died the very next week almost 5 weeks before he was going to retire. A guy came in and was like "Hey did you hear about so and so, he died yesterday". I was GTFOH with that because he wasn't sick, my coworker said "He was in the hospital the last week but didn't want anyone to know". Which was really sad because I just figured he was out again to a remote site around the country because that's what his department does, and I never knew he was in the hospital.
