I put legal alien allowed to work and I got my ssn card in December.

I did have to wait 2 weeks ..I went to the SSA office 3 times before my info was in the system (I flew into usa) I did not drive. But things may have changed since December.

Be sure to bring your birth certificate when you go ..some of the SSA officers ask for it and some don't. I had to come back one day because I didn't bring it as it wasn't a listed document required so I was told and learned otherwise later.

I stand corrected! Sorry about that...now I'm the one who's confused because I thought you can't work til you have the green card or an EAD! Luckily I filed in December so I have pleeenty of time to figure it out for myself.

It's an example of different agencies having different rules then trying to mesh them. Social Security Administration recognizes the K1 as allowed to work. DHS (USCIS) prohibits working until they authorize an EAD or greencard. So you get a card from the SSA but it is stamped VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION

Your DHS authorization is an EAD card or greencard. Confusing, right?

Should wait at least 2 weeks after you arrived before you apply SSN. They might not enter your details in the system yet. If they don't have your details in their system, they need to submit manual verification, so it will take longer before you will receive your SSN. We go today (after 2 weeks), my details is not in the system, so they need to send a manual verification. Aside from that, it should be a legal Alien allowed to work.

I was already in the system a day after I landed here in lax. The SS office checked on the computer and submitted the form and I was approved on the spot for the number and she said wait 7-10 days for delivery

I have read in a number of places the system is now automated and does not necessitate this 2 week waiting period.

In any event, we went the 1st possible day, details as follows:

1) POE - Saturday, March 10, 2018

2) SS# Application - Monday, March 12

3) SS# Received in Mail - Saturday, April 14

Still, we were left to wait 33 days from application to receipt of number.  Not certain if that was somehow caused by us going to early but given the new automated system it should not have been.
