Just wanted to follow up on all the questions and how to travel with an I-797 and ensure that I had all my information correct.  We have been in Europe for 2 weeks traveling and at the airport to fly home, we showed my husband's expired Green Card and the original NOA.  He verified his name and info and we were finished in 30 seconds.  I asked him and he said he gets multiple per week.  No need for a stamp with the I-797.....

It's good to have this clarification, a lot of poor advice in this thread. If you attempt to get the passport stamp they may take your expired green card, which would cause more problems when trying to travel. It's clearly stated by USCIS all you need to travel is expired green card and NOA, not a stamp.

AOS from K1:

02/01/2016 - AOS, EAD filed

02/25/2016 - AOS and EAD NOA1 (received 02/08/2016)

02/29/2016 - NOA1 hard copies

03/14/2016 - Biometrics

03/31/2016 - RFIE for AOS

04/06/2016 - RFIE received

04/11/2016 - RFIE evidence sent

04/14/2016 - Updated to say evidence received

05/17/2016 - EAD/AP approved

06/13/2016 - EAD combo received

06/16/2016 - Green Card Approved (no interview)

I agree wholeheartedly.  I feel like there's a bit of panic when it's not needed!

Thanks for the update guys. I wonder how long they'll have us hang in there for the biometrics letters/ exemption thereof...

I checked with USCIS about it and they raised a query. In response to that query, I got a letter stating they are going to use my old biometrics but will not refund the biometrics fees.

Thanks a lot! Where did you raise your query? Did you just call them?

Hey everyone - I meant to type this a couple days ago.  We received the NOA on May 23rd (receipt dated May 21st) and Filed received 4/9 at CSC.  We called CSC on Monday to find out about biometrics as we are leaving the country for work (cruise ships) for 3 months in two weeks.  She told us that it typically takes 30 business days and apologized for the inconvenience.  She said she was going to send out an action notice (I think?) to the next level to get us one sent out in the next 3 weeks - hopefully sooner.

We called the (800) 375-5283 number and after a bit of googling - found that by pressing nothing at all, we reached a person on the Spanish line.  We asked for English and they promptly switched to English.  By pressing the options - we were having a hard time getting to someone.  We spoke to the first girl and she wasn't able to help, but after reading some other threads, I knew to ask for a Tier 2.  She confirmed and put me through the line.  We received a call back about 2 hours later.  Everybody was very helpful and kind and now we are hopefully awaiting a letter that states they will reuse our biometrics :) Or - just get us a date before we leave!

I know there has been a ton of questions on here lately - just thought I would share our experience with you thus far.  I will post again if/when we hear something more.

Ah, is this really what would happen? I have an appointment booked to get a stamp (both for the traveling and for the social security renewal), although I know technically you don't need it, the people working in these places don't seem to always know that..

They don't necessarily get ur green card unless it is expired. I just went to Uscis office in San Jose yesterday, I walked in without any appointment and asked for a stamp. If u have a emergency traveling plan, they will stamp ur passport. My green card expires end of July, so they returned it back to me. It was very smooth.

It is a possibility but doesn't always happen. It's just not worth the risk when you don't need it. If you have the NOA then you will be fine, you may get asked an extra question or two when boarding to come back to the USA but once you land here there will be no difference to how your entered before.

Just returned from the UK after 10 days, no issues getting out of the USA or into the UK.

On arrival at check in on the way out, I had to see a desk clerk to verify my expired green card and NOA, then on to the flight.

Arriving at Newark, again had to have my details and letter checked, no real issues - just took a little longer thats all.

Hi Sydney,

Can I asked which country were you at? I will be traveling to Paris in August and was wondering if I should just travel with my expired green card and Noa letter or try to get a  I551 stamp. After reading all the stories, I get so paranoid. It doesn't help that getting my passport stamp is not easy as well. I was able to book an info pass appointment in 2 weeks. Ah can't decide what to do, getting stamp or not!!

I have not received a biometric appt yet. Package received April 12, notice date May 23rd.

Thank you Sydney!

Here is an update from my infopass today:

GC expired last month... I do have the extension letter.

Went to Inofpass to get a stamp on my passport as I travel a lot outside the US for work and I simply dont feel comfortable with just the NOA...

Agent smoothly gave me the stamp valid for a year and no he did NOT take my GC, however he did do a tiny cut at the top corner. He told me to carry the GC along with the stamp in airports. He also gave me back my NOA.

Documents I took for my pass : GC, Extension letter, and passport.

1 June 2015 - MARRIAGE
7 JUNE 2015 - AOS/EAD/AP PACKET SENT VIA NEXT DAY UPS
09 JUNE 2015 - RECEIVED NOA1--AOS/EAD/AP --> ROUTED TO NATIONAL BENEFITS CENTER (priority date)
10 JUNE 2015 - RECEIVED NOA1--AOS/EAD/AP (priority date)
19 JUNE 2015 - BIOMETRIC LETTER RECEIVED
01 JULY 2015 - BIOMETRIC APPOINTMENT (WEDNESDAY)
02 July 2016 - Interview (acceptance)
10 July 2016 - GC received (conditional)
31 March 2018 - I751 filed (removal of conditions)
10 April 2018 - NOA received for Removing of conditions.
