You are correct they have some legal rights.

Yes, I think we have established that in about 10-20 posts now so can we please move one to the actual subject now?

Even the Zucc has black tape over his webcam and a purposefully burned out microphone in his personal laptop. Should tell you everything about privacy in social media.

I will admit, the concept is alarming to me. I understand that this is for national security, but I think there's a general unease on all political sides that the media isn't transparent, and that people can be particularly touchy about President Trump.

I sincerely hope, if this goes through, that people will not be discriminated against due to their posting of disagreements with American politicians.

Anyone remember Snowden? Shows you there is no thing as "privacy", especially not on the internet.

Anyone like myself involved with Information Security know there is no such thing as privacy on the internet.

Those IOT devices at home like Alexa are recording you, the IOT cameras are recording you. They can and are hacked on a daily basis, which can lead to a lot of nefarious things going on.

The webcams on your computers are recording you, and the microphone is recording you.

Any half-wit intelligence service can and will get into these devices to record what they want when they want.

Exactly. I find it amusing when people say things like "but it's wrong, we should have privacy!". How naive.

This was all conspiracy theory a few years ago. I read an article somewhere that said companies don't like hiring people who deleted their social media or never used it. It is supposedly a red flag and considered as abnormal behavior.

Especially when they are pretty much allowing them direct access to your house and everything you do.

Mine is turned off except for when I am in my bedroom. I ask it to play netflix, BBC or white noise. The one in the living room plays BBC for the dog. That's it. I don't talk to the damn things. Maybe I ask for the weather.

They make me uncomfortable. I'm also the person who deleted just about everything on their Facebook BEFORE requesting permanent deletion. No twitter, instagram. Pintrest. Snapchat.

Young people (like me, 32, whatever) and younger have absolutely no idea how much they put out there unless they start to research. I worry for my younger siblings.

Yes. What folks need to understand is it doesn't matter really what we think/want or what's right/wrong. Pretty much most of these type of "privacy" things are not in our control and they never will be. Anyone using social media, a laptop, any kind of electronic device, should be leery.

My Alexa is used mostly for playing lullabies. The thing is though, it's not just the Alexa/Google Home things that can get hacked, it's mostly our laptops/computers with webcams/mics that get hacked, even if you have it turned off, it can be remotely accessed to view you/hear you when you are least aware. My husband works for DHS and he always tells me to keep the laptop webcam covered.

Yeah, I.. I am not a fan of built in audio/video devices.

I worry about the raspberry pi that I have hooked up to watch the dog when I am at work, but even then, it's on a closed network with a login. It gets unplugged when I get home. I just wanna watch my dog, you know? Priorities.

Yes, I agree with that. I am just pointing out that NOTHING you post ANYWHERE on the internet is not private even if it's called "Private messaging", someone is always watching. What do you think NSA is doing?

We are living in times where the government needs to keep an eye on who comes into the country. If you don't like it, don't travel.

What the NSA is doing is wrong. They shouldn't be allowed to spy on people like that.

To all of you justifying government intrusion by saying that you can be fired for what you post on social media - does your employer ask you for 5 years worth of all kinds of social media accounts? No? Should they? They can only fire you for things that are easily googable that the government should have no issue accessing anyway. And employers shouldn't be allowed to just fire people for trivial reasons.

And FYI, immigrants, both legal and illegal, are less likely to commit crimes, so guess what, the current screening is already effective enough. Domestic crime and domestic terrorism (like school shootings, a very American thing), as well as the widening inequality is what efforts should be focused on.

But you know they can turn it on and listen to you when they want to right if it is plugged in. 10-15 years ago you would have thought I was wearing a tin foil hat but this stuff is real and it has been proven that it happens. I will have to dig it out but Vice did a story about this as well and actually scared the reporter doing it. They were able to log into her computer and take web cam pictures of her in her hotel room.

When I say that it is turned off I mean that they are plugged into sockets that are controlled by light switches. My entire bedroom gets switched off, as does the TV/Google Assistant in my living room. I kill the power. I'm actually more paranoid about fires in my shoddy apartment than I should be.

AND HEY we put it on a domain! If anyone wants to look at a sleeping golden retriever all day, that's their business. I'm not walking around on them. Forget that.
