US to require would-be immigrants to turn over social media handles

I came back to the top of my rant to add a disclaimer that I am not a big fan of Trump. Because that seems to be the go-to comeback for some.

In the age we live in, social media is most definitely present and accounted for when it comes to screening people. Deal with it. I can lose my job if I post inappropriate things on social media, and every so often, the company I work for makes a point to remind employees of this (likely because some dimwit decides to try and test this and gets caught). Social media represents you, and by proxy, represents who/what YOU represent (i.e., an employer or other affiliation). That being said - anything that can get you fired from a job, or get the police called, should absolutely be considered when vetting for someone trying to immigrate to the US. Keep in mind - immigration is a PRIVILEGE, not a right or guarantee. (Another disclaimer - when I say "not a right", I'm not saying immigrants/potential immigrants have no human rights. Before someone tries to twist that.)

Concerns about social media "privacy" - lol, is social media even private? Posting something on the internet is not exactly the same thing as writing something down on a piece of paper in an empty room and hiding it somewhere private inside your private residence. It ain't called the WORLD WIDE WEB for nothing, folks. You should be thinking before you post anyhow, in my opinion. And if you're not someone with dangerous or wrongful intentions when it comes to social media, then honestly....why are you even worried? "What if they deny someone because they disagree with something they post!" Do cops pull over drivers because they don't like the car they're driving or because they're just generally a douschebag who hasn't legally broken a law? No. That'd be AWESOME (for general douschebags, anyway), but no.

Will it slow down the process? It's definitely a possibility. Any time you add a new procedure or step to any process, it may slow down temporarily while it's adjusted to. The people processing our cases are humans, after all. I don't foresee a severe slow down, or at least not a permanent slow down. Again - if there's nothing to find, it shouldn't really be that complicated of a process. But, come on - things slow down over one snow day in one specific region of the US, so... we're kind of used to it, guys.

Before this was ever even stated out loud by anyone, I honestly assumed social media would be checked - for both my fiancé and myself - when it came to something like this. My social media can be reviewed when applying for a job, or applying for some other government-based privilege, as an American citizen. Why should immigration be any different?

As others have said people that are not even in this country do not have the same rights as those that are already here and in some kind legal status.

I think there are a lot of rights in this instance.  The DOS has the right to ask for social media access.  I think the individual seeking a visa has the right, if they are concerned with privacy,  to refuse access to their accounts.  DOS has a right to take that into account in making their decision to grant or deny the visa.

Corrrct me if I'm wrong please, this new law applies to 1) visa applicants and 2) People who apply for a Residency

such people would be asked to submit all their social meadia account. Now, what is account has a private setting? Like private IG or friends only FB, then one must make it public or government still have an accsess to private accounts and will use it regardless? This got me confused

No you don't have to to make your profile private. If it's the same as when you go through security you'll just hand over your username and password. If not then they'll have other ways to get in most likely.

Most likely if you say no, you won't be getting a visa. There's no such thing as privacy in immigration, just look at the medical exams some people have to go through before coming here. Some more humiliation than others, but it's something that has to be done if you want the visa. If you don't want someone to look through your social media then don't apply for a US visa. Or stop posting stuff you're ashamed off.

Immigration is NOT a right. It's a privilege.

Due process is ..

That's why DACA is still around.

Their family members do though.

Due process can be applied to the USC(or petitioner).

That's why the the bans are being taken on a case by case basis.

DACA is still around because Judges ruled for them to stay and Former President Obama's executive order.

Again Immigration is NOT a right. It's a privilege. People don't have the right to immigrate to America just because their relative lives there so it's their right.

No, DACA is still around because some Liberal judge decided to keep it around for the time being until it reaches the SC then more than likely it will be deemed unconstitutional.

Nope. Just look at this new Facebook scandal. Nothing is private on the internet and if you had read the terms of agreement when you signed up for facebook that wouldn't be a surprise. There was even one point in time when the TOS said facebook basically owned all your photos. Personal messages are not private. Download what facebook got stored on you and you'll see it's definitely not private :P

And guess what, that's not right and that's why Facebook is in trouble. The government should stay out of people's personal lives.

Yes, I agree with that. I am just pointing out that NOTHING you post ANYWHERE on the internet is not private even if it's called "Private messaging", someone is always watching. What do you think NSA is doing?

We are living in times where the government needs to keep an eye on who comes into the country. If you don't like it, don't travel.

Even illegals have some rights under the constitution. If you're on American soil, even if you're not a USC, you have legal rights under the Constipation as it says persons not US citizens.
