DHS Proposal For Legal Immigrants Still on the Table

A while ago I raised concerns in a thread, in which an internal DHS memo was leaked to several news agencies regarding new potential policy changes that would affect a significant amount of legal immigrants and their USC families. Changes would subject a legal immigrant to removal if they attempted to use health care subsidies and other programs that are currently open to immigrants under the law. As of today they are still considering this proposal and have updated it to also include earned-income tax credits as well as other widely used potential items. It would also have an affect if used by USCs and their foreign spouses if they utilized these items for their USC children. WaPo has obtained the full proposal under consideration. It is a very large document, and far more broad than the one shared previously. I'd encourage all to read it carefully, even though I know it will take some time, and you may be reluctant.

Highlights:

It would make huge changes to the affidavit of support, add additional form and monetary burdens.

Would bar legal immigrants and USC families from utilizing health care subsidies, exchanges, and earned-income tax credits.

Would force the immigrant and USC spouse to purchase and prove they have health insurance (again here we head into the territory that SCOTUS clearly ruled on).

Consider health conditions that most immigrants today are not affected by in their petitions (how does this affect the elderly immigrants and those who are housewives I don't know).

Delving into credit scores and financial history (not sure how this would even be applied to certain classes of immigrants that are new).

There is much much more... so I'd suggest downloading the PDF. https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/4413837/Read-the-Trump-administration-s-draft-proposal.pdf
