I applied for my citizenship back in August. Then I updated my address in December, and that seems to have restarted the clock. The status now says ‘On December 4, we blah blah...’ instead of ‘On August 10.’

It used to be about 8 months for N-400 to be processed in NYC, now it says it’s up to 18 months. So now my green card has expired before my citizenship is processed. The renewal costs $540 which we cannot afford right now, on top of all the N-400 fees. But now I’m going on job interviews and not sure how my expired green card will go over in terms of work eligibility. Wanted to scheduke an InfoPass to ask the officer to stamp my passport or give me some kind of letter explaining my status, but that’s not an option in New York. Have been trying to get an InfoPass appointment for months, but it just says no appointments available, and gives no other options - no waiting list or anything. Is it worth traveling to another office outside NYC? Is this something that can even be accomplished at an InfoPass appointment? Thanks guys.

You are not required to renew your green card while your N400 is pending.  If your N400 ends up getting denied, then you would be required to renew your green card for physical proof of continuing your LPR status.

Your physical green card is expiring but that doesn't mean your legal status is expiring---just the actual card is.

Infopass appointment windows tend to open up between 12am-3am EST...try scheduling an appointment then, but yes they go quickly.   Yes, they can stamp your passport which will extend the validity of your soon-to-be-expiring green card and serve as physical proof of your LPR status (and also be used for travel purposes).
