Hi All,

i was doing a google search and came across this forum hoping to get some help. I have a GC and moved to a couple of years ago. I am from the Uk.

I am on a visit to the uk to see friends and family. Last weekend I helped my brother fix his car following which we took it for a test drive with him in the car. I am insured to drive his car while I stay here and everything was legal. Except that we kept the tools we used in the car (hammer, metal bar, screwdrivers etc) while driving it around. We were then stopped by the police and when they saw the tools just laying out in the open in the passenger footwell, they did a complete search. Following this I have been given a complete description of search which states offensive objects were discovered in the car. We showed them receipts of new parts bought and what has been changed and why we still had the tools in the car. The outcome was no action taken against me or him but I am still worried because even though we were not cautioned or arrested I'm sure this is still on my record. When I go back to us in a week can the border control do a quick search and see this on my record? Will I be in any kind of trouble because I have a feeling that it potentially shows bad character? There was no bad intention just laziness and the fact that we didn't want to leave our tools on the drive.

Thanks.

john

I think this begs the question - why were you stopped in the first place?  Was this a routine checkpoint or something else?  They obviously did not see the tools otherwise if they were in the footwell, but only after they had stopped you...

Beyond that, if this was all that there was, I can't see that it will be an issue if there was no wrongdoing.  There is nothing in the laws of either country that I know of that prohibits the carrying of tools, though it might have looked suspicious to the officer at the time...

We were initially only told that they stopped us as a routine/random check. I think they probably wanted to check the driver was insured to drive the car because they asked for the insurance cert. When the officer came to the window and saw those tools, he asked us why all those things were in the car.

No wrongdoing was found we were let on on our way and told not to carry them again but the wording of the statement from the police officer seems intimidating to me and I am worried. They're not mentioned as 'tools' instead they're mentioned as 'offensive objects'. So can the officials on the other side see this stop and it's details?

Personally - I would not worry about it.  I don't think that you received any record to begin with (did you get something in writing), nor do I think that it would be visible at this end.  You were not arrested or charged with anything either, so if anything, bear it in mind the next time you drive around.

I can't even begin to think of the number of times I've driven around with tools scattered around during a test drive of a vehicle that I have been working on, both here in the US and in Europe...

Why do you think you will be in trouble?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Did they also find the cut-off limbs of the guy you killed?
If not, then you are in the clear. There's no law that prohibits anybody, not even a Green Card holder, to drive with tools around in the car. I live in California and drive around with a loaded gun all the time, perfectly legal.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

The police were probably suspicious of the tools as that is how thieves and burglars obtain others property.  But, since no charges were filed you are okay and just wiser for the experience.
