Microsoft operating systems are on 83% of desktop computers, and with the installation of Windows 10 people basically agreed to a EULA that allows Microsoft to dictate how and when you use your computer.

Seriously folks, stop supporting Microsoft if you don't want to see this happening.

Is there a reasonable alternative to Microsoft for an operating system?

Don't say Apple...Or Linux

   Linux .... or Apple?

Going way back to the days of messing around with DOS and the command line, I don't have an huge issue with Linux really. There's a learning curve but it's worth learning. The problem for me is software compatibility. The workarounds to get windows software running on Linux are a little much at times. And the support can be a problem too. I had Linux mint running on our old HTPC and it was great. When it came time to upgrade, there were so many compatibility issues with new hardware. Hardware vendors don't care about Linux compatibility really, and most people don't want to deal with those kinds of issues.

As far as PC's, yeah Windows has most people hooked really. Which is always what Microsoft has been about. If we could get away from that, no doubt a better system would emerge. The core of Linux has always been better than Windows. It's just a bear for most people to use. So yeah we probably need that reasonable alternative to come along first.

My thoughts exactly.

I don't dislike Linux, but it just isn't supported enough to be dominate. Though that is a bit of a Catch 22.

Apple is too closed off for it to ever be the dominant system.

This pretty much sums it up perfectly. Unfortunately though the alternatives are not going to be what the public at large wants.

I used to avoid Apple products like the plague.  But my wife wanted an iphone, then a MacBook, and I had to get an ipad for work.  Now we are ALL Apple in our house, minus my Samsung phone (which I don’t see ever changing from).

The thing about Apple is... it just works.  Very well.  I don’t know ANYONE who uses MS who can say that they haven’t rebooted their computer in over 6 months.  But with Apple, that is just the norm.  It goes to sleep, it wakes up.  Install apps, no need to reboot.  On our first MacBook Pro, I decided to see how long it would go, and it was just over a year without shutting it down (ended up turning it completely off for an overseas trip).

Apple does almost everything right for personal home computing. We have a MacBook and it is does everything it needs to for home use.

I've yet to come across any technical field that uses Apple however. In science it is almost entirely Windows (every hospital I have ever worked in). None of the major electronic medical records, to my knowledge, have compatibility with apple. My wife's field is the same. Every oil and gas company she has worked in has all been windows, and all of the software for the most part is for windows. I know Mac has some popularity in more "creative" fields.

As far as I can tell it is because Mac is good at what it does but is inflexible. I used to be far more tech savvy when I was in school and had more time so I'll let others elaborate on that more if they can. Again it may be a bit of a catch 22. Why would an EMR, for example, develop for mac when every hospital uses windows?

My buddies Samsung (S7 I think) just went belly up.  One half the screen is out.  Never had a problem with iPhones, and iPads, so we go all Apple at home, but I refuse to pay the large cost for a MacBook so my wife can Skype her lessons.  Went with the Dell for that.

Never had a problem with iPhones nor Samsungs, other than slowing down as apps get bigger and processing power ratios get smaller.

Have never had to replace a MacBook Pro yet.  Have had MULTIPLE PCs and laptops in my day fail.  The good news on those is it’s usually a replaceable component (power supply, HDD, RAM etc.) so it’s repairable for a while.

I've had my current PC for 8 years now. It's a bit of a Frankenstein though since I think the only thing that still remains is the case, and one of the harddrives. However all the parts were replaced as upgrades, not because anything broke.

Much cheaper than getting a new Mac after a few years when technology changes. I do game on occasion so I've had to keep up. That would be much harder with a Mac since to my knowledge you can't just upgrade your ram or video card.

The original PC was about 1800 dollars. I reckon I've spent maybe 1,000 over the 8 years upgrading it. It can currently run brand new games reasonably well.

I would never be able to achieve that with a Mac for the same price, or even close.

You can run Windows on a Mac.

i'm by no means the smartest tool in the shed but, i couldn't even configure remote connect from a mac to a pc. i hear it's real simple but not as simple as breaking down and buying an extra home pc though.

You can use Boot Camp to run Windows on a Mac, it requires rebooting to switch operating systems. Or you can install Parallels which runs Windows within Mac OS. No rebooting, just swipe to instantly switch between Windows and Mac.
