Hi All,

Let me try to explain my situation if I may. I am a US citizen and a year and a half ago we when filing my wife's N-400 Application, we didn't file a separate N-400 for our daughter (15 at that point). Since then, my wife has been successfully naturalized but no paperwork was ever received about my daughter's status. When we applied for my wife’s and daughter’s passports, our daughter’s application was returned due to lack of certain evidence, which since then we have acquired. Now the question: is it normal procedure that no citizenship proof was ever received for my daughter and how do I get that proof now?

Thanks to all in advance

Her proof of status is her U.S. passport which she is able to obtain because she automatically became a U.S. citizen when your wife naturalized before her 18th birthday. But no, you weren’t supposed to get any additional document or anything from USCIS saying as much after your wife naturalized. As only U.S. citizens can hold U.S. passports, that’s the only proof of status she needs.

If you feel like you need more proof for your own ease of mind, she can get a certificate of citizenship from USCIS using the form N-600, but it is not necessary to have if she holds a U.S. passport. Plus the filing fee for N-600 is $1,170 which, in my opinion, is a lot to spend on a document she doesn’t really need in the first place.
