I almost would have felt better if we had gone to secondary.  We just got put in the slowest line for over 3 hours just to have the passport stamped, no questions asked.  We missed out connecting flight as well.  We paid walk up fare for the next flight (we used a totally separate airline than what we arrived to POE on, so it wasn't on the itinerary and as far as they were concerned, we were just late).  We took a shuttle to go from one terminal to another, but didn't realize that it also went to an offsite park and ride lot, so when the bus left the airport, I had a panic attack and just said if I drop on the floor, it's a heart attack for sure.    Not a good ending to what was a nice vacation.

Did you ask for your airline rep?  We did and she refused to do anything.  All we asked is if we could be moved to the quicker line.  They were rolling their eyes at us which infuriated my husband. He made it quite evident so I'm wondering now if that is why they sent him to secondary.   I agree it definitely soured an amazing vacation.

I didn't ask, because I have had no luck when I missed because of security as well. And we would have gotten to the game just after the plane took off. Airlines aren't like the olden days when they could work with you, now the agents really don't even have the authority to do anything for you anymore.

I saw agents moving people up in line to help them make their connection.  Delta did it for me once before but I still missed my connection.  I think it depends on the airline.  Spirit is the worst.

LAX is a horrid airport and the fast line is basically all machine readers so if the passport is not Canadian/VWP then it would not work anyways.

As a Canadian I have traveled to LAX as a visitor was allowed to use the machine, as a visa holder was not allowed to use the machine. So truly the setup is pretty crappy unlike other airports which have an exception line they are a very binary process at LAX.

Just curious, did you choose to not spilt up and they made you stick together? You could always go in the fast line and then it becomes a much more difficult situation for the airline to deal with as one of two passengers made it through. Your husband should just be able to say I was traveling with my spouse and they are a USC and went in the fast line.

I fully expected to stay together so we got through as far as we could before being told to go to the visitors line. I wasn't sure what the rules were and it was so hectic, so there was no having a conversation about it.

We wanted to stay together just like we did on his first POE.  I never dreamed they would send us to the non citizen line.  They didn't do that when he had his first POE and even has a green card now.  No point in splitting up, I wasn't leaving him behind and flying home alone.

I just wanted to add that LPR's and citizens use the same line at SAN (San Diego Airport). It's a smaller airport so there only appeared to be 3 lines. One for global entry, one citizens/lpr's, and one for all others.
