The question is, why are non-citizens even allowed to serve?  Shouldn't people swear the oath of allegiance before being entrusted with America's military power?

That is actually a good question.  Look at all the federal government jobs that has a prerequisite of being a citizen?  Regardless, it really isn't a question in this case.  This guy could have applied long before his military service to become a citizen, and in fact waited until he faced deportation to attempt to apply.

As someone who suffers from the affect of Combat related PTSD and TBI I take offense to this. Just because someone has PTSD or TBI doesn't give them a pass to do whatever they want. Yes, having TBI does affect some parts of the decision making process but to say "Hey I have TBI so I can go and traffic 4 pounds of xxxx" is absurd. That just flies in the face of what the rest of us Veterans have to deal with on a daily basis.

drug trafficking is a broad term. taking a laptop with coke in it to a friend sounds like some bs runner nonsense..not exactly shipping cargo/cartel level. regardless, he served this country and he served time for his offense. there is absolutely no honorable reason to dump him in another country.

A laptop case with 4 pounds of coke and the friend is an undercover agent.  What rotten luck for this guy.  If it makes you feel better, we can call him a drug dealer instead, but drug dealers are part of the trafficking logistics system as well.

exactly, what you just described is a runner. the only thing that will make me feel better is a veteran not getting deported. thanks, though.

Well he is claiming he has a TBI and PTSD from Combat, and some people are trying to use it as a crutch. So yes I take offense to that because it is making the rest of us look bad in all honesty.

Runners are part of the trafficking logistics as well hence the 15 yr federal prison term.

They do swear an oath of allegiance when enlisting into the Military. Why not have green card holders serve in the military? I have served alongside several people that were PR's but still serving this country during the best they could for their adopted country. It certainly is a lot better than a lot of actual USCs are doing in all honesty.

wait he is claiming he has a tbi and ptsd from combat or that is his diagnosis? he's not self diagnosed. so anytime a veteran with tbi or ptsd commits a crime you take it personally or do you just take it personally when that person wasn't born in the united states? that seems a bit absurd and a burden you probably shouldn't put on yourself.

he paid for his crime. deportation should not be a part of that sentence. his parents and his children are citizens, he's been here since he was 11 AND he served in the us military. he's just as american as anyone who happened to be born here.

Actually, he only paid for half of his crime.  When an LPR is convicted of a CMT they reach the radar of ICE, hence, this guy lost his LPR status and reverted to his only fall back, Citizen of Mexico which he never gave up.  Easy Peasy, the US didn't send a US criminal to Mexico, they sent a Mexican criminal to Mexico.

I understand the diagnosis because I have actually been through the diagnosing process and have been diagnosed with PTSD/TBI. Do you want to see my VA paperwork showing what I am rated for? No, I take it personal when Veterans commit a crime and want to blame that they have XYZ syndrome/diagnosis. Because it looks bad for the rest of us Veterans and further tarnishes what we have done and what we have had to go through. As soon as a Veteran does something winds them up in jail the headline always states "XXX Veteran commits XXXX". I literally learned that in the 2nd day of boot camp that whatever you will do out in the real world no long has consequences for yourself but also for the Marine Corps as whole. Because it will no long be Greensboro man did this or that, it will now be Marine did this or that.

I have served with several people that got their citizenship while in the Marine Corps and this was before the "expedited processing" that they get now. So he knew that he should have filed for his citizenship but did nothing about it.
