Hello,

My fiance is having her interview in the coming weeks in Mexico. We are not officially engaged and I haven't proposed but we will marry once she arrives. Then at some point proceed with an actual wedding. She doesn't have an engagement ring and we have no wedding date planned just yet. Will this be a problem in her interview if she's asked "when did he propose to you" or "tell us about your wedding plans"?

Not having an engagement ring is not an issue. If you don't have a tentative date, that shouldn't be an issue either. The answer "will get married within 90 days upon entry with issued visa" usually suffice.

For my I-129F, K-1, AOS, EAD, AP and ROC detailed timelines, please refer to my timeline page :)

ROC filed on December 1, 2020, assigned to SRC, approved within 106 days on February 18, 2021.

My sincerest gratitude to all VJers, especially the late geowrian.

THE ring is not an issue but how could u go thru a K1 FIANCE visa process without actually having proposed and be engaged?!

isn‘t this the whole point?! I would be a little suspicious if I were the officer at the consulate...

But anyways since you are planning a wedding at somepoint...if asked you need to say “we’ll get married within 90 days”

I’m not talking about a big event or huge social thing

I’m just saying some kind of official proposal or something like that would help.

I could be wrong but it’s just my opinion/ and what friends went thru when they did their K1

How can a proposal be "official"? It's just a question from one lover to another. It's not a legal status. I can assure you it's quite possible to get married without first having a ring or a proposal. We managed it! We just decided one day, mutually, that we wanted to be together forever and to get married. It's no different from deciding to buy a house, deciding to change jobs. The deciding is not official. Once you've done it and made the legal change, that's when it's official.

I could ask Axl Rose to marry me. Doesn't mean we are engaged or in any legal status of relationship. And my husband might have a thing or two to say about it! Point is, asking someone to marry you is not anything official. Getting married is.

There is no such thing as being "officially engaged". A proposal is not necessary. Being engaged is not a legal status. It's just a common parlance term for a couple who plan to marry. There is no way to prove you are or are not engaged, unlike married or divorced where legal documentation is provided.

All that is required is a written statement from each of you that you intend to marry within 90 days of the immigrant's arrival. Rings, parties, gifts, congratulatory cards, etc are not required and carry no status. We didn't have a proposal or a ring. We just decided to get married. For us, however, it was the second marriage for both of us and we were in our 40s and not interested in wearing a ring to show we bought a ring.

we are also in our 40's and we are not doing or never did an engagement party or such. i didnt really proposed either. i just asked simply if she would come to be with me and she said yes. Of course we knew that getting together meant to get married. she does have an ring that i bought for her and we have never been married or have kids. we still plan to get married in the 90 days

Yeh!

I do get what you’re saying!!! and you’re abaolutely right nothing makes it official but a marriage itself

I guess I didn’t say it clearly..and I also guess I would be too frightened of what the officer could think might be “real” or bona fide enough and since it’s fairly common to have a ring or some kind of proposal.

I didn’t even consider anything else in that moment and that with even me and my husband basically only talked about it and eloped 🙄😂

I apologize

Having or not having a ring does not prove anything. My now husband proposed to me one evening (2009) in Buenos Aires and no engagement ring was present. The next day we went to pick a simple engagement ring for both of us before he went back home. It was a simple cute gold ring (and affordable). One simple for him and one for me.

I did not even show it to the officer at my K1 interview in Buenos Aires and she never asked to see it. But I did tell her the story on how he asked me to marry him and since he did not have any ring at that moment, he used the coke tab ring as my ring. :P She loved the anecdote, that's all.

I never had a engagement ring or an "official proposal" and I had no problem with that on my interview. We got married and we dont even have wedding bands lol we just dont care for that kind of stuff, so there's no point in having t just to prove our marriage to other people!

relax, it's all gonna be good!

Please review the required items for the interview from your specific Consulate.  If it indicates "engagement ring" required then you better have one

YMMV

Congrats! You’re engaged!!

long version: you are engaged to marry your fiancée!

I believe signing the letter of intent that states you’re going to marry within 90 days of her arrival to US is as official as it gets in this department!

I think the OP made it sound like they have not actually made a decision to get married.  I guess we assume that they met the requirements of the I129F as to their letters of intent since they have reached the interview phase, but the wording was a little funny making some read into it a little more than they probably should.

To the OP, rings, receipts, wedding plans etc., would only serve as secondary evidence, and are not required.
