Small addition: you don’t have to work actual quarters anymore. You collect 1 point per around 1,500 USD earned and can only collect 4 points per year. But it could all be in January. So you could do it with part-time work in a few months.

That’s good news! Thank you!!

Wrong.  If they both worked and contributed then they are both able to collect.

I’m confused? 1 check? For 2 people?

I will be facing a similar issue (if he ever gets here), as I am 66 and my husband is 52. I thought we would have to be married for 10 years for him to get my social security at his retirement age (if I am dead)????

Glad there is someone like me. My mom is German and she said as long as you are married for 10 years he can get some of mine, but it doesn’t change mine. I’m calling SS tomorrow

I’m 57 and my full retirement age is 70. Is anyone else our age and has a scenario and/or facts?

I found some info from SSA. My fiancé will have insurance from the day we get married. My company offers insurance when I retire, but I’m not sure of the cost.

Many companies assume you will get Medicare so what they provide is a Medicare supplement policy which pays after Medicare.

As a US citizen, you can collect SS anywhere.

A person eligible for SS on the bases of his own work history can choose between his or the spousal benefit.  You are younger, as I recall, so there are age restrictions as to when he can collect.

There are many websites which discuss claiming SS benefits.

You're worried about him getting Social Security income---if he wants it he will need to work. If he can work until age 70, then he will at least get a decent amount.

But the greater worry is HEALTH INSURANCE. He cannot get Medicare for 5 years, and he will have to pay for it at least partially if he can work for a few years--or if not, will need to pay the 100% price, which is currently about $6,500 per year (but who knows what it will cost in the future). Add in another $2,500-$3,000 for a Medicare supplement because Medicare pays 80% only. So maybe $10,000 a year for him alone.

Now, however, he can buy insurance through the ACA and it will cost anywhere between $14,000 a year up to maybe $30,000 (yes) depending on the plan. You didn't list your state of residence, so cannot know if your state expanded Medicaid or if he would qualify for that. But usually, a 5-year wait for that too. And that is income-related, so that may be out if you guys both work, or even if he gets a decent job.

I’m basically worried about everything at our age- for me and him. Regarding Insurance, he will be covered from the day of marriage. Medicaid and Medicare.. not sure, but I work for a Medicaid provider I’ll check that too. No matter, what, his situation would improve, but I’m thinking long term. Had us currently uninsured and healthy in Barbados, but life changes things...

i strongly disagree. I don't know much about EU, UK, CA, US about health care but I can certainly vouch for multiple Asian countries.  I saw how expensive it was when my mother in law was admitted to the hospital. She is a US citizen and a retired nurse and has a good health care. But the way she was treated was unacceptable. The nurse taking care of her was overworked and was negligent. The doctor treating her at the hospital had no clue '( my mother in law had the same physician for last 20 years). The doctor at the hospital had no clue about her issues and other trouble and cut down other medicine of her's even though her primary physician sent the files.

It took a week to get one order of medicine from her primary physician restored back. We were constantly after them trying to get things done right.

For the amount you pay in States if you fly to Asian country; they will treat you as a king and give you the royal treatment.

I just want to add that I have had horrible health care in the UK. I was walking on a fractured foot for weeks because the doctor didn't want to send me a referral and waste the taxpayer's money (Money that I had paid)

I can carry my husband on my insurance for a price, but I'll turn 67 this month. How much longer can I be healthy enough to work? When he gets here, he is going to have to get a job that offers health insurance. I see that as the only solution for the future. He's willing to do any job, so that's a positive. He is currently in the tourism industry, so he could work at hotels, airports, etc. He's also managed a restaurant. He doesn't think he's too good to work for minimum wage either. So I think we will be ok. I look at it as basically he's going to have to work to pay for his health insurance. Premiums are just ridiculous!

You and I are in the same state. I live in Murfreesboro. I guess we just keep praying about our situation.
