K-1 Interview Questions

Rose and the kids are worried about what will be asked during the interview.  I told them to just relax and be honest (we have nothing to hide) but they are still worried about not knowing the answers.  Is there someplace here that has a list on Manila Embassy questions?

Also, do they allow me in the interview with them?  I will be in Manila but I am not sure if I can be there with them to help them relax.

There are a many questions that are asked but it depends on the individual and their "file". So to tell you what they will ask is a shot in the dark. Your suggestion about being truthful is good and needed. I'll give you my experience from 4 years ago.

I went with my wife and two step children to their interview at USEM and you can also avail yourself to that. Instructions are on the Embassy website. Very simply you'll go in one line as a USC and here you will process through security. One of the perks for USC is they will lock up your cell phones at no charge. That way there is no issues with where do I store my phone.  Your new family will go in another line and process through security. Once you'll through security you can meet up on the other side. Once inside for the interview you will travel to the Philippine Consulate and then when finished you'll go to the US Consulate but not without your number being called. So be patient. Now some US Consulate will let the USC stand at the window with his soon to be family and many times he is asked more questions then your fiancée is asked. For me, our CO thanked me for being there and that could I take a seat in the waiting area till she is finished. They will ask to recite a short honestly statement given to them by the CO. Once that is done the CO will commence with the questioning. MOST will have a few questions like how did you meet, when was he here last, what do the kids call him (for me they answered Tito Denny) which is what they called me. If you have a strong case it should end there. It's usually over in about 5 min. Just think waiting almost a year to process all this to only have a 5 min interview. :D

The best advice I can give and that is she and the kids be confident, answer the question with a short answer. If you go into a long answer then you are only opening yourself for more questioning because maybe the CO heard something. I saw it first hand with a case that was in progress near where I was sitting and the CO uncovered a scam and the person was denied as well as the child. Now they are band from applying again.

Tell your kids the same thing.  They will be fine. Just a lot of chitters.

Of course you can be there, whether the CO allows you at the window during the actual interview is up to the CO.  I was allowed up at the window, and was asked almost as many questions as my wife, mostly chit-chatty stuff.

With you there the questions could be very different.  They ask where you work, where you live, do you have kids, how you met, how long you have known each other, how many times you have been in the Philippines, did you do any tourist stuff - where did you go.  General stuff nothing complicated.

The whole interview is 3-5 minutes... most of your time at the embassy is sitting and waiting.

Let me share this with you and I think it will make more sense.

Top 10 Mistakes at Visa Interviews

The Visa interview is the most important part of the whole visa process. A successful interview has a positive impact on your visa being granted. Following are some of the most common mistakes people make during their interview.

1. Not Prepared Well for the Interview

Being prepared for interview can better equip you for the interview. Prior research and preparation for commonly asked questions and their appropriate answer will be helpful during the interview.

2. Not Providing Complete and Truthful Information

It is very important that you provide complete and truthful information. Any incomplete/false information can lead to unnecessary delays for you being approved. False information can have severe impact on your future ability to apply for a US visa. It may also cause you lot of frustration and legal actions against you.

3. Providing Incomplete Documentation

Have all the required documentation with complete and authentic information. Read all the prerequisites and prepare all the documents accordingly. Keeping your documentation well organized can also leave a positive impression on the consulate officer.

4. Not Carrying Appropriate Fee (applies to CR-1 and not K-1)

US consulate has a strict method for payments. Make sure you know the method and the exact amount of the applicable fee. For example, most US consulates don't accept cash as the payment method and would prefer separate bank drafts for visa application and visa issuance fee. Refer to an appropriate source for more detailed information.

5. Providing Unnecessary Extra Information

Do not give away any information voluntarily which is not being asked. In many cases, people trying to be over confident and over smart give out more detailed answers than is required. This may trigger additional related questions which may not work in your favor.

For example:

Question: Why do you want to go to the US?

Wrong Answer: I want to see how USA is and if I like it I want to stay back with my son.

Preferred Answer: For tourism purpose and/or to spend some quality time with my son/daughter.

6. Inconsistent Information

Inconsistency in the information about what you provide in the documentation and what you say during the interview can go against your case.

7. Arguing with the Consulate Officer

Never ever make any arguments with the consulate officer. If you want to know more or need additional information ask in a polite manner.

8. Having Poor Communication

Poor communication is the number one reason  that affect your case in a negative way. If you're not good in English, you should request for a regional language interpreter.

9. Having too Much Communication (talking too much)

Remember, you are the one being interviewed and not the other way around. So, keep your communication brief and to the point. Speak only when asked for an answer. Give answers that are brief and don't go on and on.

10. Appearing to be Nervous

Being confident can bring positive results. Especially, in case of visa interview where a consulate officer has to rely on limited information provided by you. Their judgment is highly influenced by the way you react to questions, your body language, and the authenticity of you answers.
