Previous addresses- form DS-260

Hello,

I'm unsure what to put down as my previous addresses in the section of the IV form DS-260. They guideline to the side says to include 'addresses at which you established a residence' , but doesn't mention a timeframe and suggests that residence on campus at a college should be listed, but not stays at a hotel. 

 

I spent 6 months in South Africa living in a large tent whilst training to be a Safari Field Guide- I had no post redirected there but does this qualify as a residence? Also, I am unsure as to whether I should put down my US husband's address as a residence of mine when I have stayed there whilst visiting for 2-3 months at a time. I'm wary of putting down that I have a residence in the US as I feel like they would think I'm making my home there whilst on a tourist visa.

Don't include your fiance's address in the US when you were visiting - this is inaccurate and will also look suspicious. 

 

I've lived a LOT of places, and decided to include/exclude addresses based on residency status.  If you were only there on a tourist visa, don't include any "residency" addresses, even if you were there longer than a month.  For instance, I studied in the UK on a student visa and included my address from when I was living there, but did NOT include my fiance's UK address from when I visited him on a tourist visa and stayed with him for long periods of time, as that's not really "residency."  (Whether or not you received mail while there isn't really the definition they're looking for when they say "established residence," by the way.)

 

If you were in South Africa on a student/residency visa (which it sounds like you should have been), include the address.  They'll need to know you were there anyway for background check purposes and they'll see it in your passport anyway.

Thanks a lot, that advice makes sense.  I was actually in South Africa on a tourist visa that I extended to cover 6 months. . But I think I'll include it anyway, it's a big chunk of time and like you say, they'll see in my passport anyway.
