Marriage certificate is not a requirement of the SSN.  You will need to go in and change your SSN card once you get EAD or greencard

I assume you were attempting to get it in your married name.  If you apply before you are married, then how can they see something that does not exist

YMMV

That's what I heard too. So is applying SSN without marriage certificate possible? Because we might still be preparing our wedding and then we can change the marital status after that?

I entered US Wednesday and I applied for SSN the next Monday. Roughly 5 days after arrival and before the wedding. I didn't have any issues.

So you were already married when you applied for a SSN then.

You can (and should) apply for a SSN before marriage, and obviously they won't require a marriage certificate since it doesn't even exist yet. To change the name on the SSN after the wedding you could get by with only the marriage certificate, and if they don't agree to that you just wait until you receive your EAD. The EAD (that is in your married name) is proof of name change and the SSA will accept that.

Yup. I had to wait for my EAD before the Social Security office would change the name on my card.

Well...I was told to wait 10 days after arrival before applying for a SSN. I got married 2 weeks after I immigrated to the US. That's why I had my marriage certificate with me.

I am wrong as SS has a new system

https://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/

she can apply for SS # and change name later if she wants

she just can not work till she has EAD

and with mine Adil had checked the box on DS 260 for immigration to apply for SS # and i did not know but SS officer still wanted to see our marriage certificate when i took him to the office
