Good luck with that.

Humans will always make a mess of the planet. We can't fix that. That is just part of dominating an entire planet.

The only way we could clean up our mess is if we culled our population by a massive degree and found an equilibrium between our use of resources and the planet's growth of resources.

That won't happen, so yes we either leave the planet or wait until it eventually becomes inhospitable to us and forces the population culling.

It is interesting how many people forget that to manufacture something, it has to come from the ground in some way.  Recycling is possible, and should be encouraged, but often times, there is somebody digging/drilling somewhere in the ground to get raw materials to make something.  We should be much more responsible in doing this work, but often in areas with little regulation or care, they do not follow responsible practices.

We can certainly reduce, reuse and recycle. That all sounds great.

It won't change the fact that as a species we consume, consume and consume. Our population as a whole continues to rise. The growth rate might be declining, but it's still net growth, in part because we can keep people alive so much longer.

It's silly to think that it wouldn't eventually reach carry capacity and then a subsequent crash.

I am not convinced that it is a silly idea. I think we can develop the capacity to have better quality lives through technology, policy and a spiritual view of the world.

What if we eat tacos el carbon for dinner and fart afterwards; does this help?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

Guns won't help you.

Money and influence will likely be what keeps you around. Though also I would envisage any smart country would put together a select group of people that have a variety of skills (and a variety of gene pool options) that could be protected in some sort of small scale self-sustained society while the rest of the world crumbles.

Also remember we are talking about something that will happen probably next century. So stocking up on an AR-15 and ammunition now probably won't help your children's children's children.

I'm being very negative today...

The sad reality is that humans don't generally do much to help others (especially future others, 200 years down the line) without some form of pressure.

The pressure doesn't have to come from the government, but it has to come somewhere.

It's called just good sense. If the world population is going to collapse due to severe reductions in space and food supply, you would want a highly intelligent, diverse group of people protected. You would want to have all the skill sets you would need to troubleshoot and continue on.

I like your negativity today.  I think it has a lot of merit (unfortunately for our species).  We want nice things today, and to heck with the impact on the planet.  I’m just as guilty as anyone.  And the earth is a finite source for... well, everything.  Unless the world comes together and decides to reverse population growth and cut back on some of the nice things we enjoy today, future generations will suffer and will end up near extinction, I think (sadly).

I was making a joke regarding the Washington insiders, their self styled elite status, and the fact that if their was a small group of protected population, they would be first in line.  As you mentioned, humans tend to be selfish when it comes to the greater good, those in government are not much better.
