Chevron’s lawyer, speaking for major oil companies, says climate change is real and it’s your fault

In a federal court in San Francisco on Wednesday, major oil companies concurred with the “scientific consensus,” saying it was “extremely likely” that human activity has been driving global warming since the middle of the 20th century. They just don’t think they can be sued for it.

“Chevron accepts what the IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] has reached consensus on concerning science and climate change,” said Theodore Boutrous, who represents Chevron and is heading up the assorted legal team for the five oil companies that are defendants in this lawsuit. But, he said, that didn’t mean that a civil lawsuit was the right way to address climate change. “It’s a global issue that requires global action,” he said.

Over the course of two hours, Boutrous ran through the findings of the most recent IPCC report (released in 2013), acknowledging that global temperatures were rising due to carbon dioxide caused by human activity, that other factors were negligible, and that as a result, sea levels were rising. No time was given to any denials of climate science, with Boutrous sticking closely to the substance of the IPCC report. Even his attempt at implying that his client was not at fault was framed within the substance of the IPCC report; he said that the report never said “extraction or production” of oil was the cause of carbon dioxide emissions, but rather the “economic activity” that burned fossil fuels.

This is that case that is in the 9th circus court of appeals right? Whatever twisted ruling they come up with will likely be overturned in the Supreme Court as it is most of the time from the 9th circus.

In the context of this article, what is significant is a major oil company has changed their public stance on Climate Change and Oil.

It's silly since within the big oil companies almost everyone has readily accepted it for awhile now, at least I'm told from my wife.

What are they supposed to do though? If they all just said "Fine we'll all stop producing" the world would go to sh**. Many of them are investing in alternate sources, or funding research in that area (I'm not sure not just altruistic purposes but because it makes business sense). Society has to move away from fossil fuels before the companies drastically cut production otherwise chaos would ensue.

Society does need to shift, just faster.

I have been right here trying to persuade folks that action on eliminating carbon is necessary.

You do know that eliminating carbon means eliminating all animal life on earth?

Invest more in getting off the planet, so that we can leave before we use everything up. Or just accept that at some point human life will be mostly wiped out. We'll probably survive, but it much smaller numbers.

Honestly that may be our best long term bet...though we are (pardon the pun) light years away from developing the technology to reach the end of our solar system, much less go to any other.

Good luck with that.

Humans will always make a mess of the planet. We can't fix that. That is just part of dominating an entire planet.

The only way we could clean up our mess is if we culled our population by a massive degree and found an equilibrium between our use of resources and the planet's growth of resources.

That won't happen, so yes we either leave the planet or wait until it eventually becomes inhospitable to us and forces the population culling.
