Hey VJers,

I am so so very confused!!! I have looked everywhere and i can't seem to find the exact confirmation as to what i am suppose to be filing for my taxes. So please if someone can just confirm or direct me in the right way to file my taxes that would be fantastic!

Received/activated my green card on the 15th of June 2017.

Left the US on the 31st of July 2017.

Currently back in Australia but have my flight booked and ready to head back to the US on the 2nd of April.

I am obviously suppose to file my US taxes for 2017 correct? (no job/income in the US for the whole year)

Where do i file my income from Australia?

what forms do i need to file/fill out?

can i just file all online?

how do i file my superannuation?

From what i have gathered online I was thinking to file my taxes through Turbotax and then file a report of FBAR on that bsa e-filing system? is this a start?

Honestly my mind is in shambles and its all so confusing and i just want someone to say point blank what, where and how!!!!

please if there is anymore info you need from me let me know!!!

Thank you all in advance!

If you’re abroad right now agree file for the extension and do the actual taxes when you’re back here.

FBAR deadline is 17 April this year but there’s an automatic extension to 15 October if you miss it - FBAR is very straightforward though so easy enough to do.

You have several options for filing US taxes.. which you must...   what visa did you enter the US with.. are you married time USC or LPR?  Or DV Lottery ..

You will file Australian taxes as per usual following Australian tax year and rules... you will have to get advice, read the info, on whether you are an Australian residents tax purposes for the year 2017 2018.... Australia only taxes with you on income and interest earned in Australia. You can file online through mygov

US requires you to declare all income ..earned and passive .. ie job and bank, investment interest..  For 2017 US tax year you are dual status.... you have a couple of options for filing.. if you are married to  USC LPR you can elect to be considered a US resident for tax purposes for the whole year and hence file married filing jointly, which usually has tax advantages.. or you file dual status, married filing seperately. If you are singke, your only optikn is to file dual status. This means that all your Australian income earned from Jan 1 through Dec 31 must be declared, but you can claim a on exempion  for tax paid on that, and I til k you can claim up to 1000000 annual income before incurring US tax. Best find a good knowlegable tax accountant for at least the first year.

Yes you must file FBAR if you have bank accounts which totalled over 10,000 USD at anytime during the year.

You came file  request for an extension vor your US return if needed... gets you another 6 months to file.. but FBAR needs to be done by April 15.. yes, do it online through bas e filing

The IRS website.. 1040 form instructions ... gives good information about filing as dual status... which must be done on paper forms and posted.. cannot be done through turbo tax and e filed.

PM me if you want to... immigration paperwork and process is a walk in the park compared to IRS forms and processes..

You might  try contacting Italian _in_NY.... very experienced tax accountant with loads of info on new immigrant tax filing

Thank you so very much for the info, I shall be PMing you shortly!!

Thank you ! So if I don’t file anything regarding the FBAR it’s automatically extended? No need to file an extra extension form?
