Timeline

Had our interview yesterday in Pittsburgh.  Wasn’t what I was expecting!  AT the end of the interview the IO said they would have to review the file and would let us know if they needed anything else.

We signed in about 15 minutes before the scheduled interview time (10:30) but did not get called in to the interview until 11:45.

From the minute we got into his office the IO seemed to have an agenda.  He talked to me for 10 or 15 minutes and then grilled the wife for an addition 50 minutes.

He kept asking her the same questions over in a different way to see if he would get conflicting answers.  He was also concerned and her English proficiency (or lack thereof).

He seemed ignorant to cell phone translators; I demonstrated mine to him after the interview.

The IO never ask to see any of our supporting documents (bank statements, Lease, Insurance, Financial information…).

However, when I ask him if he wanted to see it, he said yes.  He kept everything I had and took about 10 of the pictures.

Not overly concerned but disappointed!!

Thats what they are trained to do. Sometimes it definately can feel like an interrogation. Think definately communication is one big aspect they look at. Translators, while they can be good, also can be sketchy and not entirely accurate in their translations. I know, I worked internationally for 13 some months and it wasn't as smooth as I had hoped they would be when I needed it.

As a developer for one of the top 10 most downloaded translator apps, I'll second the sentiment here. They have come a long way, but there are not a replacement for somebody being familiar in the language. There's too many nuances involved. They're great for getting the gist of what is being stated most of the time, but not something I would use to provide testimony under oath as something is always lost in translation.

Martella&T,

I do not think our experience is the norm; but here is a list of what I can remember.  They usually have their own interpreters, but, the day of our appointment their New York office was closed due to snow so they had to use the interpreter I brought with me and I am sure that was part of the issue.

He ask me:

How we met?

How many time I visited her?

Wife’s family (Mother, Dad, Brothers, Sisters names, if they had kids…)?

Dates parents died?

Wife’s children (names, date of birth, married, husbands name, kids…)?

He ask the wife:

All the questions he ask me plus!

I think he ask all 80 plus questions that are on the I-485?

On many of the questions he would change up how he ask the question to see if she would give a different answer?

He seemed to concentrate on questions about military and weapons training?

He ask her our current address?

Where I worked?

Tom

Had my interview 10/15/2018, no update since then. I think we had the same IO.

Interview went well, and we had a good conversation with him. In the end, he said he would approve 130 and he didn't think there was a issue with 485.

And asked us to wait couple of weeks; another officer will review the case.

But still....no update. I don't know why.
