The system is crazy, that’s for sure. I think August is a sensible guess for your completion date.

Yes, name changes can only happen through courts now. The immigration officer will accept a court document and approve name change. He is not in the capacity to authroize it

OK - I should do that ASAP, though it's unlikely to be fully processed in Seattle by my interview even if I were to do it tomorrow), recording takes 6 to 8 weeks.

We went to Blaine post office to apply for our passports. Expedited is taking 4-6 weeks now!!

 

Apparently lots of post offices in King county are not accepting applications and there are people driving in from Idaho to Blaine!! This came from the past master at Blaine.

I was able to have a small talk with the immigration office while we waited for the papers to print. I asked him if how many interviews he is doing on a daily basis. He told me that they are only doing HALF the amount of interview pre-covid. The process has definitely slowed down drastically.

I am fairly committed to changing my name at this point - I will do it ASAP and hopefully even though it's unlikely to be fully recorded by my interview date, I will still have the documentation to avoid needing to get a second certificate of citizenship later on.

Something I'm confused about though - if I had an N-400 name change application that obviously can't be processed, can they still use it on my certificate of naturalization? I'm basically wondering, if I wait until after my interview to change my name, will I have to spend another 500 dollars getting the certificate of citizenship reissued.

I suppose the “consolation” with the passport delay is that there are not many places you can travel to right now anyway.

About name change — can I first get a name change in court now, then get my naturalization certificate in old name after a passed interview? In other words, can I apply a passport in new name using old name on certificate and new name on court document?

If you bring the court order name change to your N400 interview, they will just gonna issue the naturalization certificate with the new name. So if you have time, do the name change in court asap

OK that's good to know - I have about a month til my interview and am going to do my name change tomorrow or Friday.
