I751/N400/I551 Question Please help!

Please help! I am so confused. I hope to not confuse ya'all as much as I am. I am literally going in circles with thoughts, worries and doubts. Back story..

1) I-751 - Filed 3/18/2017 (Still pending of course)

2) N-400 - Filed 3/17/2018 (based on 3 year marriage, again still pending of course)

3) Currently have Expired Green Card (Expired 6/6/2017) and the 1 year extension letter (expires 6/6/2018)

Dutch Passport Expires in December (Have a date set up 6 hours away at the embassy to renew it on April 2nd, meanwhile planned an anniversary cruise March 30- April 2 so

we wouldn't be going 6 hours just for the passport)

 

With the pending I-751/N-400 will I still have to get a I-551 stamp on my passport to renew the green card before it expires (we know neither the I-751 nor the N-400 will be approved in time)?

 

If so, my fear is... going to get passport (they will take the old one leaving us with no passport until it comes back) on April 2nd, they SAID it takes 3 weeks to come back (we know these places and their timeline promises). 

 

What happens IF the passport is NOT back in time to have the I-551 Stamp to extend the green card?

What happens if we go in for a I-551 Stamp a week or two after the extension letter expires (this would be worst case scenario)? 

 

Whats the best route to take here?

Will you get your old passport back?  Also, verify that they will indeed keep your passport - that seems unusual to me.  I know that the Finnish procedure is to allow you to keep your passport while an application is sent out, but depending on the expiration date on it, they may VOID the passport for travel at the time of the application.  If it is expiring in a few days, they won't bother with that step, however.  In any case, you get to keep your old passport.

 

My understanding is (somebody will surely correct me if I am wrong though) that if you have an I-551 marked in an expired passport, and have a new valid passport, and the I-551 is still within the validity period (ie. prior to the expiration date on that), then having it in an old, expired passport does not invalidate the stamp - you would just have to carry both passports..

They keep passport. If we want the new one sent to us, we have to turn it in when we have the appointment for renewal. If we want to pick it up, we have to bring it to them when we pick it up.

ANyone got any answers?
