Californians fed up with housing costs flee state.

So since I just did this a few months ago I thought this story is pretty funny. Everybody thinks that California is some socialist utopia and how the rest of the country should look like them, even the politicians in that state say so as well. So if it is some utopia against Trump why is everybody that can leave does leave or planning on it???? Maybe it's because they would rather invest into pensions and illegal immigrants than care about the middle class, or how taxes keep going up but nothing is shown for it going up at all. Hey let's just vote for raising the gas tax twice in a year to supposedly "fix the roads" but then ear mark a large amount of that money for a high speed train that isn't high speed and will never be completed and bike paths on streets.

Just ran into a nice couple the other day in AL with CA plates on their truck.  Asked why the move, and they said it was too expensive to afford their home anymore.  1 bedroom, 650 sq ft.  Sold it for $470K and moved to AL.

They can probably buy a mansion in AL with $470K.  I am just amazed at how much people pay for housing in CA, or NY, or any other high COL areas?  Maybe traffic ticket fines should be adjusted for regional COLs.

One might surmise housing costs are high because a lot of people like living there relative to the number of houses available. At some point it's not worth it though. That point is different for everyone. Depends how much you like it there I guess.

You are right of course, the laws of supply and demand drive up the costs.  I just always wonder what draws folks to SF to pay 5K+ a month for a hovel.  Personally, I like Michigan, plenty of fresh water.

Simply jobs. I live in Boston but frequently get linkedin messages from Bay Area recruiters. They are constantly looking for talent all over the country. They pay well, then the house prices sucks it up. Most young professionals don't think about that aspect when they make the move. San Francisco is beautiful, nice weather, very appealing town for youngsters.

I have heard of people making six figures a year having to rent a room or share a room to survive up there. When I worked in Pasadena our main office is in the Bay area(was Menlo Park now Moffett field) and they always kept trying asking one of us to move up there to take a vacant position. They would constantly hire people from else where to come work there because people were thinking "hey I can make good money there" then find out the COL sucks up most of it if not all of it. Sorry but GS-11 pay ain't cutting it for the Bay area at all.

I still get messages even after leaving CA for jobs in CA in regards to IT and Telecommunications. I am thinking like "didn't you look at my profile to see that I am not in CA anymore?".

Ben Shapiro lives in California. Is fleeing beneath him? On another question, Cyber, my keyboard is now appearing in the middle of my screen and I can't see what I'm typing. How do I resolve the problem?

Yeah he is born and raised in Los Angeles CA. I don't see him fleeing at all because he in the top 10% of the state in income and his wife works at a local hospital there.

What OS and version are you running?

I guess Bay Area is another planet on its own. Manhattan used to be the most expensive city but SFO replaced it within the last decade. I could understand SFO to a certain degree since it is a city but I don't understand the folks who live 60 miles away in San Jose. I could only compare them to folks in NH that commute to work to Boston. But then houses in NH is cheap; San Jose is not much different in prices than SFO. I've told my wife if one day we move to SFO, together we need to be able make $400-500K for a moderate lifestyle.

If you're someone they could use, they will find you even if you leave in the middle of nowhere. They'll cover relocation costs; give signing bonus, etc.

I certainly agree, but it would seem like the COL would be a big disincentive.  I am not an urban lover, I hate the smell of big cities, so it doesn't appeal to me.  It is a beautiful place, but the world is full of beautiful places.  Regardless, I can also understand why people would leave if at all possible.
