Sad story. Some will blame the kid, some will blame the parents, some will blame the video game, and a few will blame the gun.  Any time a child gets a hold of a gun like this, there is an irresponsible adult somewhere behind the scenes. Unfortunately a young girl paid with her life for her parents mistakes.

A 13-year-old girl has died after authorities say she was shot Saturday by her 9-year-old brother, local media reported.

Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said the girl would not give up a video game controller when her brother wanted it.

Cantrell said she was shot in the back of the head, and that the bullet went through her brain.

The girl was rushed to Le Bonheur's Children's Hospital in Memphis. Cantrell said late Sunday that she died of her injuries, WLOV-TV and other media reported.

Authorities don't yet know how the child had access to the weapon they say he used to shoot his sister. It's also unclear how much knowledge the boy had of the dangers of guns.

i wonder how common it is, to have a gun just lying around the house for a kid to pick up like that.

too bad they didn't keep their guns properly stored.

The child was 9 years old. Even with proper education, the adult still should have kept the gun locked unloaded in a safe place where a child doesn't have access.

Children that young may be able to understand the education (though even that would vary depending on the maturity of the child), but they are also prone to emotional outbursts that frequently create periods where they don't think about consequences. Even if this boy had education about guns, and would go to the shooting range with his parent, that wouldn't have necessarily prevented this. He acted out in a moment of rage where he wasn't thinking in a calm, collected way. When children are upset they often don't consider consequences, and don't consider their choices. That's true even for some adults, but is far more common in children.

The image of a 9 year old boy shooting his sister in the back of the head is harrowing.
