Did anyone got a favorable recommendation from DOE recently? They changed the processing time to 12 to 16 weeks!!! Is it seriously taking that long now?? I have all my documents received since 02/26 and was expecting to get the recommendation within around a month... I have a postdoc position waiting for me and I don't know if they will wait that long! I'm starting to get desperate here....

Hi Conrad2019,

Did you get the final approval from the USCIS yet?

DoS sent my favorable recommendation letter on February 20th and I got the receipt from the USCIS a few days after that, but I did not get the final approval yet. I am so worried.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Folks,

Also, my case status says "name was updated." It has been like that since February 22nd and nothing changed since then. What does this mean?

Final update from me for those watching current timelines. DOS recommendation letter was received February 11th, USCIS received in the lockbox on February 13th, notice of action received February 20th, approval granted on February 22nd, and I-797 received from Vermont today. Online cases status never updated beyond the initial receipt. If that timeline seems  relatively quick, I suspect it's because my senator's office have been in contact with USCIS to hasten things.

Unrelated because I was applying with the DOS recommendation letter, but my H-1B petition was filed today. Not quite in time to avoid temporary unemployment, but I'll take it!

Hi Bibble, I think there are similarities with my case, I had 2 J1, first was a 6 weeks DOS sponsored program, then I returned back home for 9 months. I returned on another J1 research scholar as a postdoc and have been in the US for 3 years now. I applied using the NOS. I am curious to know how you drafted your statement of reason. My email is ludozambia@gmail.com. Thanks

Hello everyone,

I have a question about my J1 application.

I have been on 2 J1 programs. The first one was a 6 weeks exchange visitor program and received DOS funding. I returned home for about a year and then returned as a postdoc on another J1 program (research scholar). I am been considered for an assistant professor position in a number of universities. I am wondering which of the J1 should I apply for a waiver from? Am I subject to both J1 visas or just the last one? Please help.

So, for the first one, your year at home and any time after that (holidays) counts towards the 2 years you have to be at home. You are subject for this and maybe you don't have much time left. You can count it and maybe take the summer vacation in your country, then get the H1B in the consulate.  I did a waiver, because I did the short exchange visitor before my PhD and spent almost no time at home. It took quite a while, so you need to make a decision and fast.

The postdoc, if it was funded by your university, then you are only subject to the 2 years based on country specifics (career). You need to check what it says on your visa. It should specify whether you are subject or not.

  • 1 month later...

I applied to waiver based on IGA June 15, 2018.

They received my package and i got a case number June 28, 2018. But i still waiting from that point. It’s has been already almost 46 weeks- which is 10 months. I contacted waiver division couple times- and they said that they don’t know when I’m gonna get an answer.

Does anyone is waiting/waited as long as me???

I would appreciate if somebody answer...

All the cases in this forum were very helpful to me, so would like to share my timeline for anyone who's going through the process now.

I applied under "no objection rule" and was a student in the Brazilian Science Without Borders program.

Sent in all paperwork by mid January, but in the system says it was received on February 12.

USCIS received the paperwork on May 1st and accepted it on May 2nd. I received both letters at the same time in the mail on May 11th.

Hope this is helpful! Good luck

I have been waiting for the USCIS (Vermont Center) final decision on my J-1 waiver (no-objection statement) since November 17th, 2018. I have just received the approval document in the mail just to see that they made a mistake and sent me what I believe to be someone else's ( A Cardiologist going to TX) with my name and case number on it. The excitement to have received is blinding (Hahaha) but beware and read your documents throughly!
