What is interesting is that kind of "opposite" situation holds for green card. They do not want you to use green card in such way that you spend more than 6 month outside the US. True, CBP has been known to grill gc holders even if they spend less time overseas; I know someone who was grilled when returning to the US on day 179. 

I was a witness of situation where some Indian couple was grilled by immigration officer at POE , because they were using GC as "visa-free" tool.

IO told them that it is not purpose of GC and he let them go with the warning... Indian nationals are known to push the envelope, both on long overseas stays on a green card, and lengthy US stays, including extensions on a tourist visa.

I find it interesting that you use the term “interesting”, when it’s perfectly logical. Tourist visa is for visits, you should be spending far less time in than out. Green card is for residing, you should be spending far more time in than out.

Heck....I was grilled when returning to the US from Canada on day 60.  :unsure:
