And yet vehicular accidents are the leading cause of death among US teenagers.

Imagine how many more accidents kids would have with no driver training? I’m guessing texting and driving is still causing a lot of accidents in this age group. If you’ve ever driven or ridden in a big truck you’d be amazed what you see people doing in their cars while driving.

Forget just teens, 1.3 million people in the US die every year in car crashes, the "skill level" of most out there driving is almost non existent yet somehow they're allowed to drive without hardly having a clue what they're doing. Most gun owners in that sense are actually alot more responsible and skilled.

I think a high percentage of gun owners are quite responsible. I think too many drivers are distracted and don’t pay much attention to actually driving. And cell phones are at the top of the distraction list.

I’d love for you to quote the post where I said current gun control is perfectly acceptable.  No, let me save you the time... I have never said that.  Of course there is room for improvement, that is true for everything.  The trouble is, you cannot begin to see, or just refuse to accept, that none of the things currently proposed will change anything.

Longer waiting periods... ok, so it takes a week to get a gun instead of a day.  So a killer must plan ahead.  Or steal a gun.  Or borrow one from a friend/family.

POS background checks... can’t be enforced.  How can the police/laws force you to perform a BG check before you sell a gun to someone?

Selling guns to responsible people... a subjective approach that would quickly be shown to violate personal rights.

Banning the sale of dangerous black weapons... racist.  Won’t change anything.

Banning all guns... might work, in 30 or more years, due to the millions already out there. The actual number isn’t known, but far exceeds the published numbers.

I realize change takes time, and we have to start some time.  We all know that taking guns away completely will never happen.  Molon Labe and all that.  There are much larger fish to fry than guns, I suspect, and no one in control today is going to fall on their sword(s) to attack such a minor problem.   Even that one chick who “destroyed” her AR-15 the other day on YT.... Neat symbology that she undertook as a politician.  However, it is meaningless, as she probably owns more.  I know a lot of people who don’t own an AR.  But I know no one who owns just one.

As a person who doesn’t like guns, or think they have no place in society today, I understand it is frustrating for you and others to try to make a bad situation better.  As a person who is very comfortable with guns, it is frustrating for us as well.  The only ones who don’t want to make it better are those who wish to kill.  For the rest of us who would love to see the gun death rates drop even more than they have in the past 20 years, there doesn’t seem to be anything that would actually do much, except totally banning guns altogether.

so confused right now. how are you both?

also, you gun control suggestions are pretty weak, no wonder you think they're pointless.

I have been amazed and in some cases alarmed.  So maybe we should institute proper firearm training.

I’d rather have proper training than a ban.

For Cell Phones

Or Bridge Building?

all the gun threads we've had here, i don't think i've seen anyone ever suggest banning guns. yet it's constantly brought up.

yeah, proper training is a no-brainer.

Yes, we keep hearing the general "improve gun laws" with nothing behind them.  Maybe mandatory military service for all so they can learn how to properly handle a gun.  We can start with Jr. ROTC at 14 and go from there.

Well the Schools would be the obvious place, my School had a shooting range, they do not seem that common in the US.

there's not nothing behind the suggestions that have been made to tighten up gun control, it's that the constant refrain from most of you is that there is no point. i think it's hilarious that the only laws you think there are no point to having are gun laws. if i didn't know better i'd think all you were anarchists the way you boo hoo about things like waiting periods 'oh murderers will just borrow guns from friends - there's no point'

not all people are meant to be in the military, people shouldn't be forced to handle guns. i thought you liked freedom?

There is marked display of understanding how teenagers work on display in this thread.

Lots of things I had to do at school which I was not keen on, RE being the classic.

Anyway should not be that big a deal incorporating proper gun handling into the curriculum.

we can't get decent trade skills offered at the highschool level and you think gun training is imperative? no. just not relevant at all.
