ICE Spokesman Quits Over Leaders' Use Of 'Misleading Facts' To Discuss Calif. Arrests

James Schwab has resigned from his job as a Department of Homeland Security spokesman, saying he didn't agree with Trump administration officials' use of "misleading facts" to attack Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf after the mayor issued a warning about an immigration sweep in late February.

"I quit because I didn't want to perpetuate misleading facts," Schwab told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I asked them to change the information. I told them that the information was wrong, they asked me to deflect, and I didn't agree with that. Then I took some time and I quit."

In that four-day sweep through Northern California, Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation officers arrested 232 people — but high-level federal officials, including President Trump, said Schaaf was to blame for 864 more people not being arrested. They pointed to her public warning of a pending wide-scale raid, which she issued on Feb. 24, just as the operation was about to begin.

ICE agents had targeted more than 1,000 people in the sweep. After the raid, a Homeland Security official said it's common for a large-scale immigration sweep to net about a third of its targets, as member station KQED reports.

Trump called what Schaaf did was "a disgrace," saying her warning was the sole reason that hundreds of people escaped arrest. His remarks amplified attacks by Attorney General Jeff Sessions and ICE Acting Director Thomas D. Homan. Their claims were questioned by critics — and now by Schwab, a veteran public affairs officer who previously worked at the Department of Defense and NASA.

"I didn't feel like fabricating the truth to defend ourselves against [the mayor's] actions was the way to go about it," Schwab told the Chronicle. "We were never going to pick up that many people. To say that 100 percent are dangerous criminals on the street, or that those people weren't picked up because of the misguided actions of the mayor, is just wrong."

In his attack on Schaaf, Trump said 85 percent of the targeted immigrants had criminal records. But when KQED asked ICE to explain why the targeted people had been classified as threats to public safety, a spokeswoman said that only five of the 864 had been convicted of serious crimes.

So this nullifies what the Mayor of Oakland did.  Trump is accused daily of Obstruction of Justice.  Seems like what the Mayor of Oakland did was aiding and abetting criminals regardless of how many people are usually netted in the raids.  It also seems that the spokesperson that resigned thought the mayor was in the wrong.

i mean, those are all your assumptions of what's going on. given your take on many things trump the only sound statement in this post is 'trump is accused daily of obstruction of justice'. and rightfully so. but this isn't about trump obstructing justice. this is about the ice spokesman doing what's right - doesn't matter to me if he thought the mayor was wrong in her actions or not - he wasn't going to spew bs. when a morally sound person believes they have the truth on their side - they don't need to lie to support their view.

Doing what is right according to one side.  How many lies and obfuscations did we hear from Obama with respect to Obamacare?  Regardless, this does nothing to nullify the possible criminal actions of the mayor.

new era of trump fake wisdom is really taking hold i see. when i said the ice spokesman that quit was doing what was right, i wasn't talking about anything more than his refusing to lie. that's a basic truth. no right or wrong on that.

Your assertion is that this spokesperson did the right thing when he was asked to lie by the Trump administration.  If it can be proven that he did not lie under any past administration, then you may actually have a point.  Otherwise, he seems to be partaking in political posturing.

Anyone who knows anything about the law knows the mayor of Oakland committed multiple felonies regardless of how many people got away because of her careless and illegal actions. If ICE had caught every single person they were targeting this mayor would still be guilty of multiple felonies. If you somehow found out about an upcoming raid on a crack house next door then demand warned all the crack heads in that house that is the equivilent of what this mayor did and that is a crime. Not only is it a crime but it puts law enforcement in undue danger. I hope this mayor is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law to send a message to all the illegal sanctuary cities.
