Hello,

My wife and I are traveling overseas for the first time since she got her green card. I will be purchasing a round trip ticket for myself because I can only stay for 3 weeks. My wife will be staying longer while she cares for mother who will be recovering from back surgery. My wifes return date will be dependent on how well my MILs recovery goes so I dont want to purchase her a round trip ticket. Will CBP or anyone care that shes traveling on one way tickets? She will be carrying her GC and our marriage cert. and we will be purchasing the ticket in her maiden name which matches her foreign passport. Are we missing anything else?

Noone will ask her if she has a round trip or a one way ticket when she leaves the states. She can leave to wherever she wants to go as long as she has a valid passport.

But be aware that a green card holder can spend certain amount of time outside the states without affecting her status. I think it should be less the 180 days, otherwise she will risk losing her LPR status and being denied at entry. Some people get warnings too. So I would be more concern about the amount of time she will spend overseas.

It’s 12 months, not 6.

whether or not one way is more expensive than return depends on airline. It tends to mainly happen for countries where there is not much competition on flights.

Agree they won’t care what she leaves on but when she comes back in to the US it should be on a ticket that ends in the US. I’ve travelled i think...  8 or 9 times internationally in the time I’ve had my green card and the only time I ever got questioned - after a less than 6 month absence - was when I was on a ticket that did not terninate in the US.
