Yes. But that doesn't mean that a public figure can't be defamed. There's just a different standard of proof than for plebs. Per the ruling in New York Times v. Sullivan, in order to recover damages for a defamatory statement, the plaintiff must show by clear and convincing evidence (i.e., more than a preponderance of the evidence, the usual civil standard of proof) that the defendant communicated the defamatory statement with actual malice (i.e., knowing it was false or with reckless disregard to the truth).

Even a porn star can be defamed. Does being a porn star relate to her propensity to tell the truth?

Glad to help! I think the Sullivan case is really interesting and important, because it allows us mere mortals to speak truth to power while still protecting even the most powerful and public amongst us. We all deserve our dignity, but those of us who are private Joes get a little more protection than those who have assumed the mantle of fame willingly (or so I recall the rationale was).

Based on all the times I’ve heard-tell about how great it feels, and how much they are enjoying it while looking very bored, I’d say their ability to tell the truth may come into question.

The fascinating thing about Stormy Daniels is that what ever attempt to shame comes forward her probably has no effect, except for calling her a liar.  She came across as earnest and credible. I believe the story about the thug threatening her while she was with her daughter.  It came days after Cohen shut down publication of the story but before she signed the NDA. So who does the threat point to ? Michael Cohen.   Who did he work for at the time? DJT in Trump Tower.

 

  If folks want to take issue with Ms. Daniels not meeting their standards of sexual behavior that is their right ( although I bet a good 1/3 are hypocrites with Gold Memberships on PornHub).  That does not make her liar.

 

And on the other hand we have Donald Trump. He contradicts himself constantly and the most tenuous relationship with the truth that I have  seen in any public figure.  Who Do I believe? No contest.

My question for this situation is... what if Trump DID have sex with her?  What’s the big deal?  Why does it matter one whit, all these years later?  What will change?

I don't care that two consenting adults slept with each other or why they did it.  Trump is not in the running for Father of the Year this time anyways. What I care about is the thuggery, the bullying, the lying and the potential Campaign finance crimes all pointing to the current man in the White House.

What's telling in all of this is not once has Trump come out on video or on Twitter to attack Daniels or the playmate.

 

You know who else Trump hasn't attacked? Putin. Very clear Putin has something on him.
