Britain expels 23 Russian diplomats over ex-spy's poisoning.

Well done.

Wonder if it's going to help at all.

Usually this is how Russia reacts:

The attack on the MH17 happened in 2014, almost. 4 years later nothing has been done, besides some empty threats from the Dutch prime minister Rutte, right after the murder of 298 innocent people.

It's pretty clear what they would have done if this terrorist attack was committed by a , let's take a wild guess, country somewhere in the Middle East...

What does that actually do exactly? How does it really punish or hurt Russia? It seems only symbolic.

Best to let Mango answer that one.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Moscow refused to meet Mrs May's midnight deadline to co-operate in the case, prompting Mrs May to announce a series of measures intended to send a "clear message" to Russia.

Among them are:

  • The expulsion of 23 diplomats - who have one week to leave
  • Increased checks on private flights, customs and freight
  • The freezing of Russian state assets where there is evidence they may be used to threaten the life or property of UK nationals or residents
  • Ministers and Royal Family to boycott the Fifa World Cup in Russia later this year
  • The suspension of all planned high level bi-lateral contacts between the UK and Russia
  • Plans to consider new laws to increase defences against "hostile state activity"

A few more measures to send a "clear message"

- Increased checks on flights? Sure I guess that's good

- Freezing of state assets "where there is evidence" - I wonder how many assets actually have evidence that they may be used to threaten life or property of UK nationals? Makes me think this is something that just sounds like a big deal but the reality is they won't freeze anything

- Boycotting sports...but only some audience members (ministers and royal family) - Not sure Putin will mind

- Suspension of high level contacts - This is the probably the one on the list that may be the most significant, but none of us likely really know what it means and what impact it has

- Plans for the future...

In that 23, there is at least one soul complicit in last week's murder attempt. No act of parliment necessary.

But you are right, more pain is needed.

Seems Corbyn is prepared to give the Russians a pass.

well if it "looks to be" then i guess its all the evidence those who want to go to war with Russia need.

I would like some concrete evidence. I doubt I will ever forget the WMDs that Iraq had.

Are you qualified to evaluate whether this nerve agent is specific to Russia?  What evidence do you need?  Who is going to war? Boycott the work cup. Cut off their access to international systems.  If Russia cannot participate as an adult on the world stage they need to be treated as a child.

US did not qualify.
