@JFH I am sure that you are correct. I just didnt think it was that strict anymore. Especially as there is even direct flights to Cuba now.

It is less strict now. There are now 12 permitted reasons to travel to Cuba. There used to be zero. I'm well aware of the direct flights to Cuba. I work for one of the airlines that operates them!

Not due to the current administration. All these measurements were introduced by the Obama administration, which also Introduced the free independent tourism travel to Cuba. Now the current administration has blocked that. So, tell me again how this used to be much worse?

in 2015, Obama relaxed the restrictions for Americans traveling to Cuba. It was then restricted again in November 2017 (Which I had no idea about) So thank you for letting me know about that :)

The only thing that Trump restricted last November was that he made it a requirement that travel to Cuba must be through a recognized tour company and certain hotels and businesses were banned. Given the corruption going on in Cuba, as someone who works in the industry I think it's a good idea that travel must be booked through a bona fide company - in the interests of consumer protection.

In other words, it prevents people from going on line and doing a Google search for "cheap hotel in Cuba" and handing money over to a scammer or con artist. The permitted travel companies issue ensures that travelers can be confident that the trip is genuine, the hotel is real, the flights are booked, etc.

If I may say.... That is a pretty big change in restrictions. But that's just my opinion.

Well, at least for the last 50+ years or so.

I remember @Londonergirl being shocked at another immigration policy in another thread a few weeks ago. Seems she is getting a crash course on how strict/broken/complicated US immigration is.

@JFH Just a question out of curiosity, since you seem well educated in this. Are US citizens who are expats living in another country allowed to visit Cuba outside the 12 reasons listed? Like just for regular, everyday, tourism? For example, my wife and I are planning on living in Chile (her country) at some point in the future and have talked about visiting Cuba sometime -- if we are established in Chile and then decide to visit Cuba would that be breaking any laws or cause any problems? Chileans can visit Cuba perfectly fine.

Thanks!

My question is; how would the US government find out that you traveled to Cuba from Mexico?  Especially if you have dual citizenship from another country that has no restrictions.  I have a Brazilian passport that I never use unless I am going to Brazil.  Most people ask that Cuban officials don't stamp their passports when they arrive if they are living in the USA for whatever reason.

If your other passport is not stamped by a Cuban customs agent then how will the USCIS or the US government discover you were ever there??  Even more so if you decided to use cash the entire time over there?

Being allowed and being discovered are two separate issues, although neither changes the legality of it or need to disclose it if asked (e.g. the N-400 asks about all travel abroad).
