Schedule an Info-PASS appointment at the local CIS office, with documentation showing the emergency, they can issue AP at the CIS office in cases of emergency.

'just in case', submit an I-131 application. A local district or sub office may issue an emergency advance parole document without having the application pending, then again they may not.

We are also going through AOS and did not apply for AP. In retrospect, we really wish we had, because we did just have a family emergency last week and it would have been extremely helpful for my husband to be able to accompany his mother back to Canada (following an unexpected hospital stay in the States). If we could do it over again, we would definitelt apply for AP with our AOS application, even if we did not need it then.

In my opinion, you should apply for AP now even though you don't see a reason to need it yet. If the reason comes up suddenly, you will be very glad you don't have to deal with trying to get emergency AP.
